Donald Trump is having a hard time following the orders of Judge Arthur Engoron, who is presiding over his New York business fraud civil case. The former president loves to chat with the media on his way in and out of the courtroom, but he doesn’t love having to abide by the gag order. His refusal to follow the rules on Wednesday cost him $10,000.

Judge Engoron sent Donald Trump to the witness stand and asked him point blank whether he talked about his court staff to the press earlier in the day. According to The New York Times, the former president “insisted that his spontaneous comments in a courthouse hallway had been about his former lawyer, Michael D. Cohen,” who was testifying against him that day. He swore on the stand that he was not disparaging Judge Engoron’s law clerk, Allison Greenfield, who has already been a target of Donald Trump’s rants on social media. Of course, the former president couldn’t help himself and blurted that he thought Greenfield was “maybe unfair, and I think she’s very biased against us.”

Someone finally made Donald Trump realize that there are consequences to his actions, which the media outlet described as “a discomfiting preview of what may await.” Donald Trump can’t lean into his version of the story because reporters and TV cameras clearly caught his infraction on audio and video. After calling Judge Engoron “partisan,” which he is allowed to say, he spouted thinly veiled criticism of Greenfield by adding that the justice is working “with a person who’s very partisan sitting alongside him. Perhaps even much more partisan than he is.” And that part was not allowed under the gag order.
