Donald Trump Claims That ‘Millions’ Voted Illegally in Election

Donald Trump slammed the Green Party-led recount effort and made a claim that “millions” of illegal votes cost him the popular vote in a series of tweets on Sunday.

“I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally,” the president-elect wrote. “It would have been much easier for me to win the so-called popular vote than the Electoral College in that I would only campaign in 3 or 4- states instead of the 15 states that I visited. I would have won even more easily and convincingly (but smaller states are forgotten)!”

Trump, who often claimed ahead of his win that the election was “rigged,” did not provide any evidence for his statement, as social media users and media outlets alike were quick to point out.

Trump did indeed win handily in the electoral college, scoring 290 votes compared to Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton’s 232. But many have taken the electoral college to task following the results, given that Clinton has a large lead in the popular vote. According to the most recent numbers from the Cook Political Report, Clinton leads in the popular vote by about 2.2 million.

Sunday’s tweets are only Trump’s latest criticism of the effort to recount the vote in three key states — Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania — where Clinton narrowly lost to Trump. Jill Stein raised $6 million to carry out the effort, and Clinton’s campaign announced that it would participate in the recount in Wisconsin, where paperwork has already been filed.
