Donald Glover recently discussed a rumor that he was “friend-zoned” by a famous collaborator.

On Friday (Feb. 2), Glover and his Mr. & Mrs. Smith co-star, Maya Erskine, interviewed each other for Buzzfeed. During the segment, Erskine asked the singer if there was a rumor about himself that he “wanted to disprove.” After thinking about the question, he began to address a rumor that he was “friend-zoned.”

“There was a rumor I got friend-zoned by someone once,” the Atlanta entertainer said before Maya asked him for a name. “Someone. But I didn’t get friend-zoned by them. The rumor is I got friend-zoned by them. I didn’t get friend-zoned by them. I got other zoned.”

Erskine then insisted that she heard “some rumors of people that you hooked up with” and that she “had some names.” However, the names were omitted with bleep sound effects.

Fans began to speculate that Donald and Maya were referencing his long-rumored, but never-confirmed relationship with Jhené Aiko. In the video’s comment section on X/Twitter, fans asserted that it had to be Aiko, as the singer “wasn’t over her.”

One account posted a screenshot of lyrics from Gambino’s song, “Life: The Biggest Troll,” from his 2013 album, Because of the Internet. “To this day, I still think this part was about her,” they typed with a picture of the lyrics.

“I met this girl at a dinner, we conversatin’/She beautiful in the face, but her voice is truly amazing/Plus she write her own sh*t, becoming so close-knit,” he raps. “Smoke up and talk in the evening, she helping me focus/No Anna Nicole Smith, she getting hers/Ni**as take her props, like a musical, live and learn/She say she feel alone all the time, I’m similar/I meet her in my dreams, on the moon, I visit her/Every night I text her, ‘I wanna solve the world, I think I need your help’/She text me, ‘How you gon’ trust somebody when you don’t trust yourself?'”

Another account bluntly stated, “Jhené Aiko is Donald Glover’s Rihanna,” comparing him to Drake previously being “friend-zoned” by the Caribbean singer.

Other comments empathized with Glover hypothetically not getting over Aiko. “Jhené Aiko being my ‘one that got away’ would have me thinkin about dat sh*t 11 years later too lmfao,” someone joked. “The thought of fumbling Jhené Aiko is enough to send me into a deep depression,” another account quipped.

Glover and Aiko collaborated on a series of tracks, including the songs “Bed Peace” and “Pink Toes.” Jhené was also featured in Gambino’s “Oakland” video while he directed the visuals for Aiko’s “The Pressure.”

During a 2013 interview with VIBE, Aiko referred to their relationship as platonic. “We’re friends, we’re good friends. That’s all I’m going to say…We’re still getting to know each other,” she insisted.
