Donald Glover tied the knot with his wife, Michelle, and returned to work on Mr. & Mrs. Smith the same day.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Glover was asked about his belief in marriage. The outlet quoted an interview they conducted with the entertainer seven years ago, where he said he didn’t believe in marriage. “It doesn’t serve the purpose I would want it to serve,” he said in 2017.

His Mr. & Mrs. Smith co-star Maya Erskine was shocked at his stance and claimed that he was “the opposite now” after he got “married during the show.” Glover then elaborated on his quick morning marriage before returning back to the grind shortly after.

“Yeah. There was a day where I don’t think we had to be on set until noon or 1, so, I was like,’ Can we get married today?’ I got married in the morning,” he recalled. “We had a real wedding afterwards, too. [That night, though,] we went to our favorite restaurant and then her parents and my mom were waiting for us at the house.”

The outlet then asked Glover what changed his mind on marriage. He explained that it was a matter of finding someone to trust. But also finding someone to be completely vulnerable and honest with. The multi-hyphenate also admitted that his previous views on unions were “silly.”

“I think what happened was, well, number one, I didn’t know what I was getting out of it. I felt like I knew what she was getting out of it, and I didn’t feel like she was being honest, necessarily, about what she was getting out of it. I was thinking about it in such a silly way, which I see now. Now I realize, yeah, maybe she’s gaining some stuff, but she’s also losing a lot of stuff,” he said.

“And we eventually had an honest talk, and she was like, ‘I’m a traditional woman.’ And when she said that, some part of me was like, ‘And I want to help you be that.’ Whatever she needs me to be, that makes me happy. Especially nowadays, finding trust is so hard, and the fact that we have this and that we can even argue about it and still be like, ‘But I love you’—I mean, how many people have that?”

In early February, Glover talked about his marriage and how it informed his role in the new Prime TV series. The Atlanta creator stated that he channeled some of his personal life into his role as John Smith. He detailed how intimate moments with his wife, Michelle, were the foundation for his character’s charm.

“I think there’s a lot of little things where I took them from my own life,” he said at the show’s New York City premiere, according to Brides. “I felt like what made this show sexy is intimacy, so I wanted to do that. There’s a lot of scenes that are kind of just taken from my life.”

Donald Glover and Michelle White have been an item since 2016. Since then, the married couple has welcomed three boys.
