Donald Glover Reveals Brad Pitt Gave ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ Remake His Blessing

Donald Glover has stepped into Brad Pitt’s shoes with the remake of the hit 2005 film Mr. & Mrs. Smith and revealed he received Pitt’s blessings for revamping the role.
While at the Mr. & Mrs. Smith premiere in Brooklyn, NY, Glover spoke with ET about hearing directly from Pitt about if his reprisal of the role was up to size. “Brad was like, you know, he just Brad Pitted his way out of it,” the actor told Rachel Smith.
“I was like, ‘I just need some tips,’ and he just charmed his way out of it. He was like, ‘Oh, you’ll do great, kid.’ That kind of thing.”
He added that the veteran heartthrob was also able to impart some helpful insight into the innerworkings of John Smith and the dynamics between the character and his wife, Jane (played by Maya Erskine).
“I mean, he was very, very sweet and nice and that was very helpful,” Glover shared. “I just wanted to get a good understanding… It was great. He gave me good advice.”
The award-winning creative also touched on what led him to take on Mr. & Mrs. Smith as a project, given his reluctance to rehash or revive, but that after getting further acquainted with the project, he was sold.
“I’m not a big fan of remakes, so this was kind of a big deal to kind of take it on,” the 40-year-old admitted. “Once I saw the original, I was like, ‘This is a good date movie.’ And I was like, ‘Maybe I could make a good date show out of it?’ You know, something me and my wife could watch together.”
Mr. & Mrs. Smith will premiere on Amazon Prime on Friday (Feb. 2).
