Donald Glover and Maya Erskine leaving “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”? Not so fast, says EP

"Who are these sources?" showrunner Francesca Sloane wonders.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the season finale of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, "A Breakup."

Contrary to recent reports, the spy games may not be over for Mr. & Mrs. Smith stars Maya Erskine and Donald Glover.

The duo starred as globe-trotting secret agents in the first season of Prime Video's thriller, which is based on the 2005 film and was developed by Glover and showrunner Francesca Sloane. Soon after the streamer announced it was giving Smith a second season, Variety reported that Erskine and Glover were "not expected" to return, citing unnamed sources. But that headline came as a surprise to Sloane and her co-creator/star.

"I was just talking to Donald last night about this and we were laughing, because one of the pieces of press said, 'according to our sources,' and we're like, 'Who are these sources?'" Sloane tells Entertainment Weekly on an upcoming episode of The Awardist podcast. "We wrote a cliffhanger, we thought about it long and hard. It was one of the first things that we wrote. Why in the world — we haven't said anything — but why in the world would we ruin a cliffhanger based on a headline?"

Season 1 of Mr. & Mrs. Smith ended with John and Jane Smith being pursued by a pair of fellow assassins (Parker Posey and Wagner Moura), who have been assigned to take them out. With Glover's and Erskine's characters trapped in their apartment's panic room, the finale ends with the sound of gunfire — leaving viewers to wonder if John and Jane (who only had one bullet left between them) were killed or managed to kill their attackers.

"We didn't even get to start writing [season 2] yet. Maya and Donald may be dead; they may not be dead," Sloane clarifies. While she declined to give any specific update on casting, Sloane promises fans that "there will be an answer as to what happened at the end of season 1 in season 2."

All 10 episodes of Mr. & Mrs. Smith are available to stream on Prime Video.
