Plans for a Lando Star Wars spinoff series have been nixed, as the project starring Donald Glover will now be released as a movie.

News of the change in plans was confirmed by LucasFilm via Variety on Thursday (Sept. 14) following remarks made by Glover’s brother, Stephen Glover, indicating that Lando will be a film instead. “It’s not even a show… the idea right now is to do a movie,” the screenwriter told the Pablo Torre Finds Out show earlier that day. “Right now, because of the strike, it’s kind of like telephone, all of the information.”

Talks surrounding Glover, who starred as a young version of Star Wars character Lando Calrissian in the franchise’s 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story, returning for a spinoff first surfaced in 2020. The Glovers reportedly finalized a deal to write the project this past May, prior to the beginning of the Writers Guild of America strike.

Directed by Ron Howard and written by Jonathan Kasdan and Lawrence Kasdan, Solo was No. 1 at the box office upon its release, grossing $14.1 million from Thursday night previews, the largest ever for a Memorial Day weekend release. In addition to Glover, the film featured a cast starring Alden Ehrenreich as Solo, with Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Joonas Suotamo, and Paul Bettany.

The movie, which underperformed in comparison to previous Star Wars films, grossed a total of $103 million domestically during its four-day opening weekend. Earlier this year, Glover starred in the Amazon original series Swarm and is set to star alongside Maya Erskine in the forthcoming reboot of Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
