Donald Glover Credits Trump For His Emmys Win

Donald Glover took home his second win at the 2017 Prime-Time Emmys, and used his second acceptance speech of the night to make a dig at Donald Trump.

As he rattled off the names of people he wanted to thank, including his partner, son and unborn child, Glover also included the president.

“I want to thank Trump for making Black people No. 1 on the most oppressed list,” Glover said. “He’s the reason I’m probably up here.”

Glover was referencing more recent events in which Trump’s comments and actions have been perceived as fanning the flames of racism throughout the country. That includes Trump’s recent comments about events in places like Charlottesville, Virginia, in which Neo-Nazis and Ku Klux Klan members demonstrated in protest of the city’s decision to remove a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.

After a woman was killed when a car was driven into anti-far right protesters in Charlottesville, Trump said he condemned violence “on many sides.” He was criticized for not condemning Neo-Nazis and Ku Klux Klansmen outright.

Diversity was a recurring theme at the Emmys, and it and Trump were the butt of more than one jokes. Host Stephen Colbert noted that, for the third year in a row, the list of Emmys nominees was the most diverse it had ever been. Colbert used the opportunity to shout out several Black nominees, ending his list with a joke about Bill Maher’s use of the n-word on his HBO talk show, “Real Time With Bill Maher.”

Later, when he presented the Emmy for Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series with Melissa McCarthy, Dave Chappelle made a joke about diversity at the award show as well.

“It is an honor to be amongst you all,” Chappelle said. “And I’m truly amazed how many Black people are here. I counted 11 on the monitor.”

Glover also won the Emmy Chappelle and McCarthy presented, taking both awards home for his work on his FX show “Atlanta.”
