The rapper is also set to release new music inspired by his upcoming film 'American Dream: The 21 Savage Story' on Friday

21 Savage isn’t just releasing new music soon — a star-studded film about his life, career and immigration struggles is on the way.

Shortly after the rap star, 31, shared a poster on Instagram for a project titled American Dream: The 21 Savage Story — which featured a shot of him alongside Donald Glover and Caleb McLaughlin — he confirmed it's an upcoming biopic and dropped the trailer for it on Monday.

The trailer, which doubles as a music video for a new 21 Savage song, reveals the Stranger Things actor, 22, and the Atlanta star, 40, will portray the Grammy winner at different stages of his life.

The clip teases McLaughlin as the “Rich Flex” artist when he turned to rap as an outlet in his youth, while facing bullying at school and personal challenges at home.

Glover, meanwhile, takes over as he breaks into the Atlanta music scene and begins to find success as a musician. He also plays the hip-hop star when he was controversially arrested by ICE and held in an immigration detention center for 10 days in 2019 over a visa that expired in 2006, after he and his mother moved to the U.S. from the U.K. during his childhood.

Throughout the visual, the “Creepin’” rapper appears and performs an unreleased track.

“See my shooter pescatarian, but he eat up all the beef / You gave me your ass to kiss, but want the all of me / I stand on business, dot my Is and cross my Ts / All I got is these lil' pictures when I think 'bout all the Gs,” he repeats in the chorus of the new track. “Memories in my head, the devil talkin' to me / I know Satan down that path, but God walkin' with me /  Put your phone light in the air if you done lost a n---- / Kept it solid, ran up a bag and didn't have to cross a  n----.”

The only other audio in the trailer comes from the Golden Globe winner as he’s seen in the studio with 21 Savage’s longtime collaborator Metro Boomin, who’s played by Jabari Banks. “When I first got here, they ain’t give me a name. Just number 21, treated us like savages,” he tells the producer, who responds, “That’s it, that’s your name: Savage 21.”

“21 Savage,” he replies.

The project’s official website simply says that it’s “coming soon,” but the trailer reveals “music inspired by the film” is due for release Jan. 12.

21 Savage hasn’t released a solo studio album since 2018’s I Am > I Was, although he’s released collaborative albums with Metro Boomin and Drake (2020’s Savage Mode II and 2022’s Her Loss, respectively) and toured extensively since then.

In the years since I Am > I Was dropped, he’s also teamed up with Glover and his Grammy-winning Childish Gambino rap project on a number of tracks, including the hit “This Is America.”

Four years after the hitmaker’s arrest and the subsequent Free 21 Savage movement that led to him being released from ICE’s custody, he was granted the ability to legally travel outside of the U.S. and became a "lawful permanent resident" in October 2023.

His lawyer shared a statement, obtained by PEOPLE, at the time. "She’yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph followed all applicable Immigration laws since his initial detention by ICE," Savage's immigration attorney said. "His immigration court proceedings have now been terminated and he is a lawful permanent resident of the United States with the freedom to travel internationally."
