Every year, people decide to leave winter behind for good and relocate to the Palm Springs area. And one of the things they find themselves no longer needing are winter coats.

‘Tis the season for giving, as they say, so here’s an easy way to warm someone less fortunate.

On Nov. 28, John Sohn, owner of Jonathan’s Cleaners, announced the start of the 16th annual Jonathan's Cleaners charity Christmas coat drive.

The event collects coats and other winter items to help the homeless, struggling families and others who need extra clothing during the winter season.

“It’s amazing,” Sohn says. “Every year we put up collection boxes with no expectations, and every year this amazing community rallies behind our cause, and our boxes overflow with their generous donations.”

The Sohn family includes Priscilla, Carolina, Sophia, Olivia and John.

Donated coats and jackets of all sizes, used or new, are welcome. Jonathan's will clean the coats for free and provide them to the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission, who will then distribute them throughout the community where they’re needed.

Items can be donated at the following locations during business hours:

  • Jonathan’s Cleaners La Quinta, 46-660 Washington Street, Suite 1, La Quinta

  • Jonathan’s Cleaners Palm Desert, 44-250 Town Center Way, Suite C-8, Palm Desert

  • Value Cleaners, 74-903 Highway 111, Indian Wells

  • Mission Hills Covenant Church, 72-105 Via Vail, Rancho Mirage

The coat drive runs through Jan. 1, 2024.
