Dolphins trade Adam Shaheen to Texans. Details on deal and what’s next for TE room

The Dolphins have traded tight end Adam Shaheen and a 2023 seventh-round pick to the Texans, the team announced Tuesday, recouping a 2023 sixth-rounder from Houston.

Shaheen, 27, started seven games in 2021 but a midseason knee injury sidelined him for four games and he afterward lost playing time to Durham Smythe, who re-signed to the Dolphins on a two-year deal in the offseason.

In the first two weeks of training camp, Shaheen received limited targets and repetitions amid a deep tight end room that also includes Mike Gesicki, Hunter Long, Cethan Carter and Tanner Conner. In the team’s first depth chart released Monday, Shaheen was listed behind Gesicki, Smythe, Long and Carter.

The Dolphins originally acquired Shaheen, a 2017 second-round pick, from the Chicago Bears in a 2020 trade. The team then gave Shaheen a two-year extension through the 2022 season. In 28 games as a Dolphin, Shaheen recorded 24 catches for 260 yards and three touchdowns.

The team’s trade of Shaheen comes one day after Sports Illustrated reported the team has had talks about deals involving wide receivers Preston Williams and Lynn Bowden Jr. The team will save about $1.8 million by trading Shaheen and incur a dead cap charge of about $333,000.

The Dolphins are expected to enter the 2022 season with at least three tight ends on the 53-man roster, Gesicki, Smythe and Long. And there’s a likelihood they keep a fourth in Carter, who was a special teams fixture in 2021.

The team will hold the first of two joint practices with the Buccaneers in Tampa on Wednesday.
