  • Dolly Parton said she prefers wearing jumpsuits while performing for a very valid reason.

  • She looked back on her fashion archives in her new book, "Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones."

  • Parton said jumpsuits stop fans "getting the kind of 'peep show'" that skirts  "accidentally offer."

Dolly Parton has always dressed the way she wants but it turns out one of her most iconic looks came about because she was worried about overexposing herself.

In her new book, "Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones," released on Tuesday, the legendary country superstar gives fans an in-depth look at her private costume archive from the 1960s up until the present day.

While Parton is known for wearing bold outfits, she writes in the book that ever since jumpsuits came into style, she has preferred to wear them over dresses and skirts when performing.

"A new popular style in the '70s were formfitting jumpsuits and pantsuits with big bell-bottom pant legs — in fact, this is one of my favorite styles of all time. I have them in a rainbow of colors," she writes.

"Practically speaking, wearing jumpsuits on stage prevented folks in the front row from getting the kind of 'peep show' that wearing a miniskirt could sometimes accidentally offer," Parton continues.

However, the multi-Grammy Award-winning songwriter says that there are other reasons why she favors the jumpsuit, too. They're both flattering and functional.

"I like looking elegant onstage, and I love it when you can see the silhouette of my legs when I wear sheer bell bottoms — that's pretty, but it's workable," she writes.

"Since I had a real small waist and was short, I thought the jumpsuit style showed off my body better. And with a jumpsuit, you don't have to wear a belt," Parton continues. "Those jumpsuits became my go-to look in that decade — and my big ol' bell bottoms were ringing louder than most."

It seems that Parton still favors jumpsuits these days too.

The singer wore a leather jumpsuit with rhinestone-adorned shoulders when she was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last year.

When she performed at the ceremony in November 2022, Parton announced plans to make her first rock 'n' roll album, which she has turned around in just 12 months.

Parton will release "Rockstar," which features collaborations with the likes of Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks, Steven Tyler, and more, on November 17.
