Dolly Parton has returned with the latest single from her forthcoming album, Rock Star: an anthemic cover of “Wrecking Ball” featuring Miley Cyrus herself. Stream the song below.

Beginning with a soft piano intro, the song crescendos into a full-on pop ballad by its first chorus, with Parton and Cyrus harmonizing the signature hook. Cyrus then takes on the second verse, as a drum part drops, and thick, distorted rock guitars add an extra layer of oomph. By the bridge, orchestral strings carry the progression, and Parton and Cyrus belt together in a call-and-response fashion, with Parton impressively taking on the higher parts.

When the song reaches its grand conclusion, the two throw in a last-second interpolation of Parton’s hit, “I Will Always Love You,” singing one round of that song’s iconic hook before finally landing on a sweet, major chord resolution. Stream the single below.

Last year, Parton joined Cyrus for her second annual New Year’s Eve special, where the two teamed up for a live mash-up of the same two songs: “Wrecking Ball” and “I Will Always Love You.” That version gave a bit more time to the latter tune, but lacked the same level of energy the new studio recording reaches. Still, it’s always good to see a godmother and her goddaughter rocking out.

“Wrecking Ball” is the latest single from Rock Star, following a string of covers, including a version of “What’s Up?” with Linda Perry, Song of the Week honoree “Let It Be” with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, a mash-up of Queen’s “We Are the Champions” and “We Will Rock You,” and a take on Heart’s “Magic Man” with Ann Wilson. Additionally, she also shared the new song “Bygones,” featuring Judas Priest’s Rob Halford and Mötley Crüe’s Nikki Sixx, and the lead single, “World on Fire.”

Rock Star is due in full on November 17th, with pre-orders ongoing.

Meanwhile, Parton is keeping herself plenty busy. Though she might only be contactable via fax machine, she has no plans to retire, and is even booked to headline the Dallas Cowboys’ Thanksgiving Day halftime show next month.

As for Cyrus, she’s recently stated that she has no “desire” to tour again, calling the process “isolating.” On the flip side, she’s been busy making new music, and shared the single “Used to Be Young” in August. This past March, she released her eighth studio album, Endless Summer Vacation.
