Will Doja Cat (‘Paint the Town Red’) make Grammy history with 4th straight nom for Record of the Year?

Doja Cat has been nominated three times in a row for Record of the Year at the Grammys (2021-2023), all for singles that reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. Her latest effort, “Paint the Town Red,” just skyrocketed to fifth place on the Hot 100. Will it be her next Grammy contender? If so, she would set a new record for the most consecutive nominations in history. Watch the music video above, and make your predictions here in our predictions center.

“Say So” was a breakthrough hit for Doja Cat. The 2020 single surged up the charts until the release of a remix featuring Nicki Minaj finally got the song to number-one. That leveled her up in her career, earning her 2021 Grammy bids for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for the song and Best New Artist for her work overall.

Her next top-five single was “Kiss Me More” featuring SZA in 2021. It didn’t quite reach the top of the Hot 100 (it peaked in third position), but its staying power nevertheless made it one of the biggest hits of the year. Its parent album “Planet Her” was another step up for the artist, so not only did she earn a 2022 Record of the Year nom for “Kiss Me More,” she was up for Album of the Year as well.

“Kiss Me More” won Doja Cat and SZA the Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, but “Planet Her” didn’t win any album prizes. So based on recording academy rules, when she released another hit “Planet Her” single in the following eligibility period, the number-seven-peaking “Woman,” it qualified for recognition in 2023 and was indeed nominated for Record of the Year, bringing Doja Cat her third citation in a row in the category.

That put Doja Cat in elite company. In the history of the Grammys, only four other artists have been nominated for Record of the Year for three consecutive years: Roberta Flack, Steve Winwood, Post Malone, and Billie Eilish. Now Doja Cat could break that record with a fourth straight bid. “Paint the Town Red” is one of two singles she released this summer, following “Attention” in June, so she could theoretically enter either for Grammy consideration, but “Paint the Town” is shaping up to be a much bigger hit: “Attention” peaked at number-31 on the Hot 100, and “Paint the Town” has already cracked the top five.

“Paint the Town” is rising up our Grammy predictions chart too. As of this writing it ranks 14th with 89/1 odds in the race for Record of the Year. That puts it just six slots away from the top eight likely nominees in the category. If it maintains its upward trajectory on the Hot 100, expect it to keep climbing in our odds too.
