Dog Dad Chris Evans Just Tweeted the Sweetest Video of the Moment He Met His Rescue Pup

April 11 is National Pet Day and Captain American never lets his constituents — human or canine — down.

On Wednesday, actor and celebrity pet parent Chris Evans took to Twitter to share one of his most beloved, intimate and nostalgic moments: a video of the first time he laid eyes on (and touched hand to paw with) his rescue pup, Dodger.

“This is the moment we met. He was trying so hard to stay seated even though he desperately wanted to get out. I knew right away that he was coming home with me, so I took this video to always remember our first hello. Rescue dogs are the best dogs!! #NationalPetDay,” wrote Evans in the heartfelt post.

Documenting your pet’s adoption day is a rite of passage that cements your bond, often showcasing just how much of the process is also about the animal choosing their new parent. As seen in Evans’ video, Dodger’s welcoming tail wag and excited displays of affection — licking his soon-to-be new dad’s hand and “giving paw” — leave no doubt that this pair was meant to be.

Of course, this isn’t the first time the actor has delighted fans with adorable footage of his furry friend. Last September, Evans posted a clip to Twitter of Dodger going lovingly wild when the duo were reunited after 10 weeks apart due to a lengthy filming schedule.

Evans told PEOPLE he originally adopted the mixed-breed boxer while filming the movie Gifted.

“One of the last scenes we were filming was in a pound, a kennel,” Evans tells PEOPLE. “I foolishly walked in and I thought, ‘Are these actor dogs or are these real up for adoption dogs?’ And sure enough they were, so I was walking up and down the aisles and saw this one dude and he didn’t belong there. I snagged him and he’s such a good dog. They aged him at about one, he acts like a puppy, he’s got the energy of a puppy, he’s just such a sweetheart, he’s such a good boy. He loves dogs, he loves kids, he’s full of love.”

In a world of celebrity divorces and breakups, we’re so relieved to see that this endearing relationship continues to thrive. Happy National Pet Day, you two crazy pups!
