Dog Who Broke Record for Longest Stay at Michigan Shelter Finds Forever Home: 'She's My Girl'

The 4-year-old pit bull mix, who was rescued from a dog fighting ring, waited patiently at the shelter for nearly two years

A very patient dog finally got her happy ending!

Kimmy Gibbler, a 4-year-old pit bull mix who broke a Michigan animal shelter's record for the longest stay — nearly two years — has been adopted.

The Humane Society of West Michigan (HSWM) in Grand Rapids shared the happy update on its Facebook page, alongside a photo of the black-and-white dog posing next to a celebratory basket full of goodies, including treats and a Lamb Chop squeak toy.

"Fantastic news! Kimmy Gibbler has been adopted! Kimmypalooza has been a success and Kimmy has found her new home," the organization wrote, referring to a month-long social media campaign the shelter created to help the dog find a forever home as she approached her two-year anniversary at the facility.

"We would like to thank Kimmy's foster for housing her for the last two years, teaching her how to love, play, care, and be a dog. Kimmy wouldn't have found her home if it wasn't for you," the post continued.

Kimmy's proud new owners are a Lowell, Michigan-based couple named Jay and Carol Sherwood, who heard the animal's moving story and decided to meet her, according to WCNC Charlotte. The pup was rescued from a dog fighting ring before arriving at HSWM, and her face bears scars from her ordeal.

In a Facebook post last month, HSWM said the previous shelter where Kimmy resided noted that she was "the most scarred dog to ever come through" its facility.

Zoey Goehring, an employee of HSWM, told WCNC the scars may have been why numerous would-be adopters passed over Kimmy. Still, Goehring — who was at the facility when Kimmy first arrived — described the dog as "super resilient" despite her painful past.

"I don't think humans have treated her the best in the past, but she's so forgiving and is willing to show love," she noted.

New owner Carol said Kimmy is a bundle of energy and is settling into her new home well. "She came in like a tornado, and she hasn't slowed down since," she joked to WCNC.

The Sherwoods had recently mourned the death of a dog and had no plans to get another — but they couldn't resist Kimmy's charms. "I hate to even call her an animal. She's my girl," Carol said. "I believe in destiny. I feel like there were just too many coincidences that all came together … I think she was meant to be here."

Throughout "Kimmypalooza," Kimmy captured the hearts of HSWM's followers as the shelter shared adorable details about her in its daily Facebook posts as part of its campaign to get her adopted.

"Nothing can stop Kimmy Gibbler from having fun! She's a tank when she plays — she'll do anything to catch a ball. She's an expert in acrobatics and doesn't mind diving for the ball," said one post, which featured a photo of the dog running through grass.

"Kimmy's favorite playtime activity is fetch with a ball! Not any ball, though, she loves her hard rubber balls that she can chew and play with for HOURS! She will play and play until she's completely tuckered out," another post read.

Not surprisingly, people were overjoyed at the news that Kimmy had finally been adopted. "Crying happy tears for Kimmy," one person wrote on HSWM's post.

"Soooooo happy for her and he family...been watching her story a long time! Look how happy she is!" another person commented.
