More than 15 years after Casey Anthony’s daughter, Caylee, died, Casey has a strained relationship with her own parents, George Anthony and Cindy Anthony. Casey was charged with Caylee’s murder in 2008, but acquitted of the charges in 2011. Where does her relationship with George and Cindy stand today?
Does Casey Anthony Still Talk to Her Parents?
For Casey's dad, their relationship is likely over for good. "I don't want to see her, I don't want to talk to her,” he said on Crime Watch Daily in October 2017. “I've always said that I would never talk to my daughter. I actually lost my daughter and my granddaughter in 2008."
Casey's parents first spoke out because they want the public to understand how painful the experience was for them.
"I really believe out there, you know, there's a certain amount of people [who] don't really understand what we've been through, how traumatic it's been for these last nine years," said George, who admitted it got so bad that he tried to commit suicide. "I guess I didn't drink enough alcohol, I didn't take enough pills."
George spoke out about his relationship with his daughter again, this time on the Dr. Oz show in 2019 -- one year after he was involved in a near-fatal car accident. During the segment, Casey's father wrote an emotional letter to his notorious daughter, seeking a reconciliation.
"I just want to let her know how I felt," he said during the conversation. "I know of one thing I did say to her: 'I would love to see you and I would love for mom to know where you're at, how you're doing.'"
George continued, "I said, 'Casey, no matter what, I'm still your dad and I love you.' That was hard for me, but I needed to get that from me because you can't move on if you keep on holding all these things inside, you need to be able to express yourself."
The patriarch returned to the Dr. Oz show in October 2021 and opened up on where he stood with his daughter.
"Would you be OK having a relationship with Casey if she never told you what happened to Caylee, her daughter? Your granddaughter," Dr. Oz asked in an October 2021 interview. "Wow," George replied with a gasp as he became emotional. "That's a very hard question for me."
During Casey Anthony’s Parents: The Lie Detector Test, which premiered in January 2024, Cindy provided viewers with a major update on her current relationship with her daughter. She revealed that not only has she not seen Casey in person since 2016, but she hadn't spoken to her at all since 2021.
According to Cindy, the last text Casey sent her was in regard to Caylee's remains. The 2021 message from Casey read, “I am going to once again ask to come and retrieve my daughter’s ashes, as well as more of her property and anything else of mine that is still at your house." Casey's initial text concluded by saying she will be in town in two weeks, and that she hoped to make arrangements with her mother to pick them up during that time.
When Cindy responded that she would not give up her granddaughter's ashes, Casey texted again, writing, “Stay with your murderous, adulterous, rapist husband. You don’t deserve any part of her and you will never again have any part of me. You chose your husband over both your grandchild and your children. Biggest mistake of your life.”
Casey concluded the pair's final exchange by telling her mother she will pick up Caylee's ashes from her "when [Cindy's] dead," and that she would never reach out to her again.
Casey Anthony Accuses Dad George Anthony of Sexual Assault
In November 2022, Casey opened up for an in-depth interview for the first time on the topic during Peacock’s three-part limited series Casey Anthony: Where the Truth Lies. While her parents didn't appear on the docuseries, Casey opened up on her past and current relationship with them.
“The outside world saw this perfect little family and there were moments of that for sure but that wasn't the reality,” Casey explained. “Our life at home was a lie, telling the truth, especially in our house wasn't allowed. It all comes back to my dad.”
During Casey’s trial, one of the main defense arguments was that she had been molested by her father and he played an instrumental role in disposing of her daughter’s body. Her father has denied the allegations and has never been charged. In court, George submitted a DNA test to prove he wasn’t Caylee’s dad.
In the interview, Casey opened up on the alleged abuse that she says started at age 8 when her dad came into her room at night. She alleged she was “physically hurt” and told she couldn’t “tell mommy what happened.”
“He’d put a pillow over my face and smother me to knock me out,” Casey alleged. “That happened several times. I’m sure there were times where I was incapacitated as a child where my body was limp and lifeless.”
While she didn’t tell her mom until she turned 19, she claimed her mother was extremely controlling and was trying to keep her from “being a sexual being.” Casey also alleged that her father staged Caylee’s drowning to cover up that he may have been abusing her.
George was reportedly “outraged and appalled” by the claims that Casey made in the docuseries. “It wasn’t true in 2011 and it’s not true now,” an insider close to the family told People. “He denies it all and will continue to deny it all until his final breath.”
Do Casey Anthony’s Parents Think She Killed Caylee?
Prior to his near-death experience, George and his wife, Cindy, revealed they didn't trust their daughter.
"Casey knows what happened to Caylee. I feel that in my heart," George said on Crime Watch Daily in October 2017. Casey has claimed that George was with Caylee when she died, and he insisted that's a lie. "Do I feel that she took my granddaughter's life? I don't want to believe that, but Casey is the one [who] can answer that question."
In January 2024, George and Cindy took polygraph tests while discussing Caylee’s death on A&E’s Casey Anthony’s Parents: The Lie Detector Test. Once again, George denied knowing where Caylee was on the day she died. He was also asked if he concealed information about Caylee’s whereabouts and paused before responding, “No.”
The person administering the lie detector test pointed out that George was “struggling” to answer the question. “Maybe it’s because it was so close to our house that [her body] was found,” George answered.
Meanwhile, Cindy previously said that she doesn’t doesn't think Casey would have murdered her daughter on purpose, but she still believes their granddaughter's death was her fault.
"No, I don't think, I truly, honestly don't think she killed her," said Cindy. "I don't know. I don't know if it was an accident or what happened. I don't know if Casey got distracted and Caylee drowned in the pool." Cindy also revealed that Casey had been suffering from frequent seizures and may have blacked out during Caylee's death and not remembered what happened.
What Happened to Casey Anthony?
Casey made national headlines in 2008 and became the central figure in a criminal trial that captivated the country. By 2011, she was acquitted of her 2-year-old daughter's murder and charges of aggravated child abuse and aggravated manslaughter of a child. However, she was found guilty on four counts of providing false information to a law enforcement officer.
