‘Doctor Strange’ Tops Foreign Box Office With $60.2 Million

Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” topped the foreign box office for the second consecutive weekend, earning $60.2 million.

The superhero film’s global total stands at $492.6 million, which passes the hauls of several previous costumed hero adventures, among them “The Incredible Hulk” ($263 million), “Captain America: The First Avenger” ($371 million), and “Thor” ($449 million).

In China, “Doctor Strange” has made $83.5 million after ten days of release. Other top markets include Korea ($37.1 million), the United Kingdom ($24.2 million), and Russia ($20 million). It has now scored two straight weekends of first place finishes in North America, where its total stands at $153 million.

DreamWorks Animation’s “Trolls” took second place on the foreign charts with $18.3 million. Top markets include the United Kingdom ($2.4 million), France ($1.8 million), Spain ($1.5 million), and Mexico ($1.5 million). The animated film is a big-screen adaptation of the popular toyline of flamboyantly coiffed creatures and features the voices of Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake. Its global gross clocks in at $222.3 million.

Sony’s “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” took third place with $13.2 million. The film made $11.7 million of that in China. The Iraq War drama debuted in limited release in the United States, where it expands to 800 theaters next weekend.

Alien invasion thriller “Arrival” and “One Piece Film: Gold,” a Japanese animated fantasy, rounded out the top five, earning $10 million and $9.9 million respectively.
