The trailer for Doctor Who's new season teases a massive adventure spanning millions of years

The Doctor is back for another epic adventure — and the stakes are higher than ever!

Doctor Who
promises another gripping, grandiose joyride through time and space when the beloved sci-fi series returns for another season on May 10 on Disney+. This time, the new fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and sidekick Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) traipse through the prehistoric period, England’s Regency era, the ‘60s and the far-flung future to stop a mysterious threat.

The action-packed trailer, provided exclusively to PEOPLE, opens with the Doctor’s time and space-traveling ship, the TARDIS, whizzing through the floor of an office before screeching to a stop.

“Give me the lovin’!” the Doctor bellows as he exits the ship.

“Where did he come from?” wonders Ruby’s mother (Michelle Greenidge).

“I don’t know,” Ruby says. “He sort of popped up at the right moment. And then he spoke about time travel.”

As Ruby cautiously steps inside the TARDIS for the first time, awestruck by its enormity and futuristic technology, the Doctor asks her if she wants to learn his “secret.”

“I have the whole universe at my fingertips, and I’m on my own,” he explains. “I’d love it if you came with me.”

“Who are you?” she asks.

“I'm the Doctor,” he responds simply, explaining his ship to her. “It's called the TARDIS. It's a time and space machine.”

“Is it safe?” Ruby inquires.

“No idea,” he admits.

In one scene, the Doctor and Ruby find themselves in the prehistoric era overlooking a lush valley of vegetation, while a brontosaurus and other dinosaurs graze.

“What if I change history by stepping on a butterfly?” Ruby asks.

“Well, that's not going to happen, is it?” the Doctor says.

After she actually steps on one, Ruby’s appearance instantly changes: she’s covered in scales, ridges and green antennae protruding from her head.

“What's wrong?” Ruby asks the Doctor, who gulps upon seeing her altered look.

As the trailer moves to scenes from England’s Regency era, the Doctor admits he’s “never seen anything like this before.”

“Oh, my Bridgerton! This place is completely mad,” Ruby exclaims.

In the next moments, the Doctor and Ruby eventually find themselves trapped in a tight corridor with an unseen threat quickly approaching.

“Don’t be silly. There’s no such thing as monsters. There’s just creatures you haven't met yet,” he reasons, before a dinosaur-like creature opens its large snout and wails at them.

A montage of brief scenes shows the vastness of space and a vision of London in ruins.

“The whole world could slide into the pit. This is what we’re trying to stop,” the Doctor says.

In the kitchen of Ruby's home, the Doctor and Ruby's mother share a rare, quiet moment. “I’m still her mom. I need to know if she’d be okay. You’ll keep her safe?” she asks him.

“I will keep her safe. I promise,” he assures her, gently taking her hand.

Cutting to moments of Ruby throughout this season, she says it's taken her "all this time" to "realize" her purpose in life.

"I’m going to save the world,” Ruby says breathlessly.

As the trailer reaches its rousing conclusion and a cover of David Bowie’s “Changes” crescendos, pre-snippets of the Doctor and Ruby’s adventures — a ‘60s dance moment, the Tardis resting on a cliff’s edge — hint at what else lies ahead for the duo.

“Everything is possible,” the Doctor explains. “Everything is possible.”
