Doc Martin season 10, 9pm, ITV

Rumours are rife in tonight’s episode about the Doc’s new job in London. The villagers are up in arms. Mrs Tishell (Selina Cadell), for one, has a pricing gun and she’s not afraid to use it. Receptionist Morwenna (Jessica Ransom) is another who takes the news badly. But it’s Chris Parsons (Vincent Franklin) who is especially furious. He’s gone to bat for the grumpy doc on numerous occasions and feels betrayed. Chris is singing a different tune, however, when the Doc, Morwenna and Al rescue him and his wife Helen (Martin Clunes’ Manhunt co-star Beth Goddard). It’s an incident that brings a new meaning to ‘wet suit’ in this bittersweet penultimate Portwenn outing.

Ralph & Katie, 9pm, BBC One

Ralph and Katie are hopelessly devoted to each other.
Ralph and Katie are hopelessly devoted to each other.

In the final two episodes in this engaging A Word spin-off, Ralph and Katie (Leon Harrop and Sarah Gordy) face more challenges in their first year of married life. Ralph’s mum Louise (Pooky Quesnel) is concerned to see him at the doctor’s but Ralph tells her it’s ‘men’s stuff’ and doesn’t want her to get involved. Then, in the second episode, Ralph and Katie are looking forward to Christmas together. They’ve been tested as newlyweds, but this is a tricky one – both sets of parents are under the impression that the couple is spending Christmas with them. Let’s hope they can work it out, as we’d like to see a second series!

The Fades, 9pm, BBC Three

If you’re already getting into the Halloween spirit, TV schedulers are way ahead of you with themed shows and airings of horror films and dramas. This fantasy horror series from BAFTA-winning writer Jack Thorne, first shown on BBC3 in 2011, stars Iain De Caestecker as Paul, a youngster in the grip of apocalyptic dreams, who is one of the few people able to see ‘the Fades’ – dead spirits. A great cast also includes Daniel Kaluuya, Tom Ellis, Daniela Nardini and Natalie Dormer.

Versailles, BBC iPlayer

If there’s a Bridgerton-shaped hole in your viewing, try this drama which formerly aired on BBC2. It follows ‘Sun King’ Louis XIV’s elaborate plan to base his court at Versailles, complete with a new palace. ‘A king without a castle is no king at all,’ his late mother warns Louis in a feverish dream. His ministers are aghast at being stuck in a ‘backwater’, not least because there’s always someone planning to kill Louis. You’ll have to concentrate at first as lots of the men look quite similar (a bit like the Cowardly Lion from The Wizard of Oz, which was obviously a look in 17th-century France) but thankfully George Blagden and Alexander Vlahos stand out as Louis and his brother Philippe.

In Bruges stars Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell

Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell star as squabbling hitmen in this offbeat comedy from writer-director Martin McDonagh. The pair have been sent to Bruges by their boss (Ralph Fiennes) and are awaiting further instructions. The more cultured Gleeson takes the opportunity to do some sightseeing but a restless Farrell – who is clearly grappling with his conscience – strops about like a teenager until he meets and falls for a woman working on a film shoot. The two stars have teamed up with McDonagh again in his most recent film, The Banshees of Inisherin, which is released this weekend.
