DNA Evidence Leads to Arrest in Decade-Old Kidnapping and Attempted Rape Case

After a decade, DNA evidence assisted in arresting a 55-year-old man for alleged kidnapping and attempted rape.

Gregory Alan Trepanier was charged with kidnapping and attempted first-degree criminal sexual conduct in Maplewood, Minn., on Friday, according to Ramsey County Sheriff Department jail records obtained by PEOPLE.

Trepanier was arrested in connection with an incident dating back to Nov. 23, 2014, reports ABC 75 and Twin Cities Pioneer Press. However, he is also under investigation for an additional two unsolved kidnappings and rape threats that occurred around the same time, according to court documents per ABC 75.

On Nov. 23, 2014, around 2:40 a.m., a woman called authorities reporting that she had been kidnapped in a bar parking lot near Woodlyn Avenue and Ariel Street North, per ABC 75. She said the man who kidnapped her had a gun and threatened to sexually assault her.

Once the victim left a bar at closing, she alleges she began backing out of her parking spot when a man who was wearing a black ski mask approached her car and opened her passenger door, according to ABC 75. He then pointed a gun at her and threatened to hurt her if she didn’t engage in sexual activity with him.

Allegedly, then the suspect directed her to a parking lot of a senior living facility. She turned off the route from her friends — who were driving ahead of her. Her friends then called her twice, and she told them that she was taking a man home, per ABC 75.

After she parked, the suspect allegedly told her to undress. She refused, and he allegedly replied, “Oh (expletive).” He apologized and told her, “I didn’t pick you for any reason at all.” The suspect then left her car, and she called the police and her friends, according to ABC 75.

Her description of the suspect matched a booking photo of Trepanier from an unrelated incident that occurred two weeks before the kidnapping and attempted rape.

The suspect left stains in the car, which allowed police to collect his DNA. Although his DNA wasn’t identifiable in 2014, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension got a match between the sample and Trepanier in February.

Trepanier has been arrested several times since the incident. In 2018, he was convicted of stalking and indecent exposure, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE.

Representatives for the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office, Maplewood Police and the Minnesota Judicial Branch did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for more information on Monday.
