Seattle head coach Pete Carroll said star wide receiver DK Metcalf and the Seahawks were "working" to reach an agreement on Wednesday. It came a day later.

Metcalf and the Seahawks agreed to a three-year, $72 million extension with $58.2 million guaranteed, a person with direct knowledge of the contract told USA TODAY Sports. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to divulge financial terms of the deal.

The deal includes a $30 million signing bonus, the highest ever for a receiver.

The 24-year-old receiver skipped the Seahawks' minicamp in June amid contract negotiations. He did report to the team's training camp on Wednesday but didn't take part in practice. Carroll said Metcalf wasn't sitting out due to his foot following offseason surgery, all but confirming it was contract related.

Metcalf was drafted out of Ole Miss by the Seahawks in 2019 with the 64th overall pick. In his three seasons with the Seahawks, Metcalf amassed 3,170 yards on 216 receptions and 29 touchdowns. He had a career-high 1,303 yards receiving in 2020.

He was due to enter the final year of his rookie contract this upcoming season before the extension.

Carroll was confident that Metcalf would get a new contract.

"We’ve been through this for years, you know. And it’s a challenging time,” Carroll said in June. “We’ve had so many high-profile guys that have gone through this process and how’s that worked out for us? We figured it out in time. And so (GM John Schneider) is on it and he’s as experienced as you can get at handling this stuff, and DK’s got great representation and DK is a heck of a kid.”
