'District 9' star Sharlto Copley has filed for divorce from his wife, Tanit Phoenix, after over 5 years of marriage.

According to legal documents, obtained by The Blast, Copley pulled the plug on his relationship on June 26, 2023. Interestingly, the actor says the famous couple has actually been separated for years. In the filing, Sharlto says he split from his wife on October 30, 2021.

Sharlto, who is well-known for his appearances in the 'A-team' and Disney's 'Maleficent' alongside Angelina Jolie, says the reason for the couple's break up is "irreconcilable differences."

The former couple shares a 6-year-old daughter, and the good news is that it doesn't appear there will be any custody battle. The actor is asking the court to order "joint" legal and physical custody of the child.

As for spousal and child support, Copley claims the ex-couple has a prenuptial agreement -- and the amount of support should be based on what's in the document. He added, "All property be divided and confirmed in accordance with the parties' Prenuptial Agreement."

Plus, the actor is asking that the former couple split any attorney's fees for the divorce case.

As for Tanit, she is a very famous model who was featured on the cover of 'Sports Illustrated.' According to reports, the couple began dating in 2012 and after four years tied the knot on February 15, 2016. On New Year's Day in 2017, the couple welcomed their first child together. Both of the stars are from South Africa, and have homes in their home country and Los Angeles.

In the past few days, Copley made huge news after discussing the possibility of doing a follow-up to the Academy Award-nominated film 'District 9.' The actor sat down with 'Dexerto' talking about 'District 10.' The creator of the film told the outlet the new film was "coming in the near future" and Copley added the to excitement.

Sharlto responded the creator might have been "white lying" a bit about the timing.

"Because as it turned out… I mean, I think he believed it at the time, but now he’s doing Gran Turismo, so that’s going to be a year-and-a-half before we can get to D10," Copley said.

Adding, 'District 10' is "getting close… like we had drafts of it that we’re going back and forth [with]. Let’s say a year-and-a-half, two-year timeframe… that we’re shooting. I’m not promising, this is not a promise from me."
