Disneyland’s Proposed $1.9 Billion Expansion May Include Rides for “Black Panther, Frozen, Coco” in Next 10 Years

New details for the expansion project known as DisneylandForward were proposed during a city council meeting in Anaheim, Calif. on Tuesday

• Construction for the proposed project would be carried out over the next 10 years

• Possible additions may include attractions and rides themed to Frozen, Coco, Black Panther and more

New details of a massive development project at Disneyland have been revealed!

The proposal was presented during an Anaheim, Calif. city council meeting on Tuesday. According to the city's official website, the project, known as DisneylandForward, confirms that Disney has agreed to invest a minimum of $1.9 billion into the park in order to update rides and attractions, lodging, entertainment and shopping over the next ten years.

The project, which includes expanding areas west of Disneyland Drive and the Toy Story Parking Area, could potentially require funding of up to $2.5 billion to complete.

In September, Products Chairman Josh D’Amaro teased the possibility of introducing themes from Frozen, Coco, Black Panther, Tangled, Peter Pan, Zootopia, Toy Story and Tron at Disneyland within the next decade.

Attractions with these themes already exist at a number of Disney's other parks. The Frozen Ever After ride is open at Epcot at Disney World in Orlando and an entire Frozen land opened recently at Disneyland Hong Kong. TRON-themed coasters exist at Disney World's Magic Kingdom and at Shanghai Disneyland. Shanghai has a dedicated Zootopia land as of 2023 and Toy Story Land is already part of Disney Studios in Orlando, among others.

Along with its expansion, Disney has proposed several initiatives intended to serve the Anaheim community it resides in, including affordable housing, a three-acre community park, and street and transportation upgrades.

Additional City Council hearings regarding DisneylandForward are expected to occur in April and May. 

A representative for Disney did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Along with the proposed 10-year transformation, the park is working on refurbishing an existing ride that fans know and love: the Haunted Mansion.

The park temporarily shut down the attraction in preparation for major updates starting in Jan. 2024. In August 2023, Disney Parks Blog announced that the iconic attraction would close in order to “expand on the story and lore of the Haunted Mansion” ride located in New Orleans Square.

Along with a new retail shop and expanded queue space, the construction process will also be used as an “opportunity to help improve the accessibility” of the ride, according to the blog.
