What's new on Disney+ UK in March 2022: The movies and TV shows to stream

After a recent price hike, it's a huge month on Disney+ in March headlined by the arrival of the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe show. Oscar Isaac's Moon Knight might currently be best known for the character's dodgy accent in the trailer, but audiences will soon get to find out more about the mysterious character.

Elsewhere, Pixar's new movie Turning Red gives Bao director Domee Shi her feature film debut and Disney+ welcomes a selection of Oscar-nominated movies from its 20th Century Fox acquisition.

Among them is West Side Story — Steven Spielberg's first ever musical, Guillermo del Toro's stylish noir remake Nightmare Alley, and Jessica Chastain's SAG Award-winning turn in The Eyes of Tammy Faye.

Original movies coming to Disney+ UK in March 2022

West Side Story (2 March)

Despite a rather disappointing run at the box office, critical reviews and audience acclaim were strong for Steven Spielberg's reimagined take on West Side Story. In some ways, it's a pleasantly old-fashioned bit of filmmaking — paying homage to the 1960s original movie — and in others, it's an incredibly modern and stylish big screen musical.

Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler portray the star-crossed lovers from opposing sides of a New York City gang war. The film has earned seven Oscar nominations, including a nod for Best Picture and frontrunner status in the Best Supporting Actress category for Hamilton star Ariana DeBose's performance as Maria.

Turning Red (11 March)

Domee Shi delivered an eye-catching Pixar short in 2018 with Bao, and was subsequently hired to helm a feature-length animated feature for the studio. The result is Turning Red, which follows a teenage girl as she suddenly finds herself transforming into a red panda whenever she becomes agitated. Newcomer Rosalie Chiang leads a voice cast that includes Killing Eve star Sandra Oh.

The film is accompanied by a documentary, Embrace the Panda: Making Turning Red, delving into the behind the scenes process which carried the movie to the screen.

Nightmare Alley (16 March)

Guillermo del Toro's first movie since he won Best Picture and Best Director for fantastical romance The Shape of Water is an interesting one for the filmmaker. An adaptation of the 1946 noir novel — previously filmed in 1947 — it tells the story of Bradley Cooper's drifter as he joins a travelling carnival and learns the tricks of the mentalism trade, before breaking out in the business on his own.

With a glittering ensemble cast — Rooney Mara, Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette and Willem Dafoe to name just a few — and all of Del Toro's signature style, it's a blood-soaked noir tale that pushes all of the right buttons.

Cheaper By The Dozen (18 March)

The 2003 movie comedy gets a new lick of paint in this reboot, which casts Zach Braff and Gabrielle Union as the couple struggling to manage family life with their children from previous marriages. In this new movie, Braff and Union move their family to a bigger home in order to expand their bakery business, causing trouble and stress for the kids.

Fresh (18 March)

After an acclaimed premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, this unconventional romance story is heading to Disney+ via Star. Disillusioned with dating apps, Noa (Normal People star Daisy Edgar-Jones) meets Sebastian Stan's mysterious stranger Steve at a grocery store and they begin seeing each other.

Soon, though, dark secrets are revealed.

More Than Robots (18 March)

Directed by Community actor Gillian Jacobs in her feature debut, this documentary tells the stories of four teenage robotics teams from around the world as they prepare for an international competition. The documentary has been made with the support of international organisation For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) along with Lucasfilm's initiative Star Wars: Force for Change.

The Eyes of Tammy Faye (23 March)

Jessica Chastain has earned a nomination for Best Actress at the Oscars thanks to her portrayal of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker in The Big Sick director Michael Showalter's film. The movie immediately drew headlines for Chastain's remarkable physical transformation.

A fairly traditional biopic, it follows Tammy Faye's early connection with Christianity and her romance with preacher Jim Bakker, with whom she would become a fixture of faith-based TV in the 1970s and 80s before Jim became embroiled in charges of fraud and conspiracy.

The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild (25 March)

This continuation of the ultra-successful Ice Age franchise gives the spotlight to possum brothers Crash and Eddie, as well as Simon Pegg as the returning weasel adventurer Buck Wild. Made for Disney+ without the involvement of original Ice Age creators Blue Sky Studios, it sees Buck Wild rescue Crash and Eddie when they become trapped in an underground world, which is home to some unruly dinosaurs.

Olivia Rodrigo: Driving Home 2 U (A Sour Film) (25 March)

Until last year, Olivia Rodrigo was best known as the star of the surprisingly fun Disney+ show High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. But then her debut album Sour became a global juggernaut of chart success. This documentary follows the recording of the album during the COVID-19 pandemic and also features live performances of many of its biggest and most recognisable tracks.

Original TV shows coming to Disney+ UK in March 2022

The Dropout (weekly from 3 March)

Prior to 2015, Elizabeth Holmes was lauded as a success of entrepreneurial spirit. She had become the youngest self-made female billionaire in America with her health tech company Theranos, which claimed it had the ability to revolutionise blood testing. However, the next few years saw claims that her technology's innovation was exaggerated and found Holmes implicated in accusations of wire fraud and conspiracy.

Amanda Seyfried plays Holmes in this series, which showcases the businesswoman's rise and rapid fall. The cast also includes Stephen Fry, William H. Macy, Laurie Metcalf and Utkarsh Ambudkar.

Parallels (23 March)

While superhero movies are taking their first tentative steps into the notion of a multiverse, new series Parallels throws itself headfirst into the heart of the concept. It follows four childhood friends who live in a quiet mountain village, only to be separated by a sudden catastrophe which sees standard universe rules abandoned. The buddies must try to navigate the chaos in order to find each other again and restore the world they once knew.

The Wonderful Spring of Mickey Mouse (25 March)

Disney continues the Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse series with another extended seasonal special, this time reflecting the slightly warmer weather of spring. Animated in classic style, the special will feature Mickey and his friends as they explore the natural delights of the season.

Moon Knight (weekly from 30 March)

Moon Knight introduces a brand new character to the MCU as Oscar Isaac portrays Steven Grant — a gift shop worker with dissociative identity disorder, who also happens to be mercenary Marc Spector. He becomes embroiled in a huge mystery involving Egyptian deities, as well as Ethan Hawke's villainous cult leader Arthur Harrow.

In something of a departure for Marvel, Kevin Feige has emphasised the brutality of this show when compared to the studio's other projects. He told Empire: “It’s been fun to work with Disney+ and see the boundaries shifting on what we’re able to do ... We’re not pulling back. There’s a tonal shift. This is a different thing. This is Moon Knight.”
