New Disney Plus movies: May 10, 2024 update

Tom Power, senior entertainment reporter

This week's update sees Let It Be, a remastered version of The Beatles' 1970s docufilm ahead of the legendary band's final (and famous rooftop) concert, added to this guide. We've also removed the last entries from March as they're no longer considered to be new.

Welcome to TechRadar's new Disney Plus movies guide. Below, we've rounded up all of the new movies that have joined the streaming titan's movie back catlog since April began. That includes Let It Be, a remaster of a 1970s docufilm about The Beatles' last-ever concert before their tear-jerking break-up, which arrived on Disney Plus on May 8.

Not a fan of the legendary Liverpool quartet? Don't worry, there are plenty of other recommendations (good or otherwise) to peruse in this article. Our best Disney Plus movies guide is also packed with fantastic suggestions from our entertainment experts. In short: you won't be found wanting for something to stream on one of the world's best streaming services (NB: US readers should note that some entries in this article are only available on Hulu stateside. We've noted where this is the case for your convenience).

New Disney Plus movies: May

Let It Be

Release date: May 8
Runtime: 89 minutes
Age rating: TV-14 (US) / 16-plus (UK)
Director: Michael Lindsay-Hogg
Cast: Paul McCartney, George Harrison, John Lennon, and Ringo Starr
Rotten Tomatoes (RT) score (based on the 1970 original): 78% (critics); 88% (audience)

A restored print version of Lindsay-Hogg's poignant 1970s documentary movie, Let It Be is a behind-the-scenes look at The Beatles as they rehearse for the final and iconic rooftop-based concert before the band split up. Restored with a lighter color palette, and containing footage not seen in Peter Jackson's The Beatles: Get Back docuseries (one of the best Disney Plus shows), Let It Be is a fascinating window into the lives of the legendary pop-rock group as they prepare to say goodbye to their worldwide fanbase.

You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll belt your heart out as you singalong to the quartet's most famous hits as they rehearse. One of May's new Disney Plus movies for Beatles aficionados, music lovers, and documentary fans to savor.

Fantastic Mr. Fox

Release date: May 3 (US only; already available in the UK and Australia)
Runtime: 87 minutes
Age rating: PG-13 (US) / 12 (UK)
Director: Wes Anderson
Cast: George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe, Owen Wilson, and Wallace Wolodarsky
RT score: 93% (critics); 85% (audience)

One of many, well, fantastic films made by acclaimed auteur Wes Anderson, Fantastic Mr. Fox is a wonderful stop-motion animated feature that's based on Roald Dahl's iconic children's book of the same name. In it, the titular anthropomorphic mammal (Clooney) leads his family on a spate of farm-based thefts, which eventually leads to three farmers joining forces to hunt Mr. Fox and his merry crew.

A rollickingly fun-filled adventure-based crime caper, Fantastic Mr. Fox will delight audiences young and old with its all-star voice cast, adorable visuals, and wisecracks. I've enjoyed it on repeat viewings, too, so it still holds up 15 years after its initial release.

Daredevil

Release date: May 1 (US only; already available in the UK and Australia)
Runtime: 133 minutes
Age rating: PG-13 (US) / 12 (UK)
Director: Mark Steven
Cast: Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, Michael Clarke Duncan, David Keith, Colin Farrell, and Joe Pantoliano
RT score: 43% (critics); 35% (audience)

Years before Netflix's critically acclaimed and award-winning Daredevil series gave us a worthy live-action take on The Man Without Fear, this 20th Century Fox flick was the "best" – and I say that through gritted teeth – big or small screen offering we had.

Affleck stars as Matt Murdock, a blind lawyer by day and the superpowered vigilante known as Daredevil by night. This 2003 film sees him engage in courtroom battles when he's not in his costume, and take on Farrell's villainous Bullseye (not to mention fall in love with Garner's Elektra) as his superhero alias.

A poorly constructed but meme-worthy Marvel movie, 2003's Daredevil is worth streaming if you fancy a good old laugh. Netflix's Daredevil TV series, which is also available on Disney Plus, is must-see TV, though. Stream all three seasons now before its spiritual successor Daredevil: Born Again, one of many Marvel Phase 5 TV shows that are in development, arrives in 2025.

New Disney Plus movies: April

The Greatest Hits

Release date: April 12 (available on Hulu in the US)
Runtime: 94 minutes
Age rating: PG-13 (US) / 12 (UK)
Director: Ned Benson
Cast: Lucy Boynton, Justin H. Min, David Corenswet, and Austin Crute
RT score: 48% (critics); 67% (audience)

A movie that puts an abnormal music-themed spin on time travel stories, this Ned Benson-directed film is sure to have you reaching for the nearest box of tissues.

The Greatest Hits stars Boynton as Harriet, who has spent the past two years struggling to move on from the death of long-term boyfriend Max (Corenswet, who'll star in James Gunn's Superman, aka the DCU's first film, next year). One day, Harriet realizes that certain songs from their time together literally transport her to the past – a move that means she might be able to save Max. However, when her attempts collide with a burgeoning new love interest David (Min) in the present, Harriet has to decide whether to stay stuck in her grief-stricken past or move forward with her life.

Described as a mix between Doctor Who and 2000s-style romance films like 500 Days of Summer, The Greatest Hits will appeal to a certain demographic, but *ahem* sounds like it's missing that stand-out moment or plot twist to make it truly memorable.

Wish

Release date: April 3
Runtime: 100 minutes
Age rating: U (US and UK)
Directors: Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn
Cast: Ariana DeBose, Chris Pine, Alan Tudyk, Evan Peters, Ramy Yousseff, and Harvey Guillen
RT score: 48% (critics); 81% (audience)

Wish was the animated film that was supposed to celebrate all things Disney during its landmark 100th birthday. Unfortunately, whether it was the janky visuals that were a cross between 2D and 3D, plus its generic plot and soundtrack (read our Wish review to find out more about what we thought of it), the entertainment giant's latest animated offering wasn't as good as we'd hoped.

For the uninitiated: DeBose voices Asha, a Rosas-dwelling teen who, alongside a sentient wishing star called... well, Star and her goat sidekick Valentino (Tudyk), attempt to put an end to King Magnifico's (Pine) tyrannical rein over his subjects' wishes. You can learn more about the centenary-positioned flick's development in our exclusive chat with its creators, who told us all about Disney's legacy-built movie that celebrates 100 years of wish fulfillment.
