Disney Oscar Push is a Team Effort
We are more than three months away from the 92nd Academy Awards but studios, producers, and the public have been thinking about the awards ceremony since many films were announced, and some studios even before. Many movies are made with award season in mind, and that's how the industry has worked for quite some time. However, in recent years, as categories expand and the telecast evolves more popular films have started receiving attention, and even statues, on awards night. This year's blockbuster, the culmination of over a decade of movie magic, "Avengers: Endgame" is not yet ready to leave the spotlight, and I don't think we will find any fans complaining.
Disney has officially nominated its superhero superstars for academy consideration. Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man), Chris Evans (Steve Rogers/Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton/Hawkeye), Josh Brolin (Thanos), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man), and Don Cheadle (James Rhodes/War Machine) have all been submitted for Best Supporting Actress. Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow), Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Karen Gillan (Nebula), and Brie Larson (Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel) have all had their names submitted for Best Supporting Actress. That may sound like a lot, but it was a movie about a superhero team after all, and it was quite the ensemble cast at that. We'll have to wait to see if anything comes of it. Though, if anyone is going to collect an acting nomination most people have their money on Robert Downey Jr. (though the star has mentioned he doesn't want an Oscar campaign).
But just as the movie has an ensemble focus in its acting its incredible budget was also able to employ quite the talent behind the scenes and Disney has not forgotten about the community that makes its movies possible. It has also asked that voters consider "Avengers: Endgame" for awards including: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Editing, Best Original Score, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Sound Mixing. So, really, it sounds like Disney wants it all for Avengers. It may not be out of the realm of possibility. Last year the company's "Black Panther" film came away with three academy awards and a nomination for Best Picture. Sometimes you just can't ignore quality, even if you aren't a superhero fan in the first place.
