Disney Bumps ‘New Mutants’ and ‘Artemis Fowl’ to 2020

As part of a huge release slate announcement, Disney announced that “The New Mutants” and “Artemis Fowl” are being moved from their August 2019 release dates to 2020.

This is the third time that “The New Mutants” has had its release date moved. The film was originally set for an April 2018 release, but was moved to February 2019 and again to August 2019. This was done in part to allow for reshoots to make the horror superhero film more frightening.

Directed by Josh Boone, the film stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Maisie Williams as two members of a group of mutants who are held in a facility and tested on against their will. It will now be released on April 3, 2020.

“Artemis Fowl,” a project developed by Walt Disney Pictures, is an adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s YA novel series. Directed by Kenneth Branagh, the film stars Ferdia Shaw as a young thief whose schemes trigger a battle against supernatural forces. The film is now set for release on May 29, 2020.

Disney’s slate announcement has shed light on how the studio plans to handle the remaining films on 20th Century Fox’s slate following the completion of the company’s merger this past March. Among other announcements, Disney announced that Fox’s adaptation of “West Side Story,” directed by Steven Spielberg, will be released in December 2020.

To accommodate the release of the musical, Disney also pushed back the release of James Cameron’s “Avatar” sequels back a year, with “Avatar 2” now set for release on December 2021.
