The Tybee Post Theater has planned a flurry of activity for Saturday, Feb. 3, including an acting workshop in the morning and a fun-sounding “Grease” fundraiser sing-a-long and 1950s costume contest in the evening.

The “Art of Acting and Auditioning Workshop,” for those 18 and over, will be led by Tony Award-winning actress Dinah Manoff and film and television acting coach Lisina Stoneburner.

Tybee Theater Executive Director Evan Goetz said the workshop is the perfect opportunity for “those who live in the Savannah area and who are auditioning for films, commercials and theater.

“It will be a great class for any experience level,” he added. “The approach from Lisina and Dinah can be used with a variety of levels.”

Admission to the 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. workshop is $30 and tickets to the 7 p.m. “Grease” sing-a-along fundraiser and costume contest also are $30.

Manoff played the role of Pink Lady Marty Marachino in the movie “Grease,” and starred in television’s “Empty Nest” for seven years. In addition to leading the workshop, Manoff will be on hand after the showing of “Grease” for a question-and-answer session. Interestingly enough, Manoff is the daughter of actress Lee Grant.

Stoneburner has been described as one of the most sought-after acting coaches in the Southeast and has been actively coaching actors of all ages since 1991. She is the founder and co-executive director of The Company Acting Studio.

Goetz said the workshop will employ a “dynamic approach, utilizing hands-on exercises and script readings to provide participants with practical tools and insights.”

The sing-along will be filled with 1950s nostalgia and singing (the words to the songs will be on the movie screen). Those planning to attend are encouraged to dress like “Grease” characters for a chance to win prizes, Goetz said.

“I most definitely will dress up!” Goetz added, without revealing details of his costume. “We would love to sell over 100 tickets.”

Goetz said the sing-a-long fundraiser is not just a night of singing and fun.

“It's a wonderful opportunity to support the Tybee Post Theater. All proceeds from this nostalgic event go towards preserving and enhancing the theater. By attending, you're not only immersing yourself in the magic of ‘Grease’ but also actively contributing to the success and longevity of a cherished cultural institution. It's a night of entertainment with a meaningful impact, making it a fantastic way to enjoy the past while investing in the future of the Tybee Post Theater.”

The theater was constructed in 1930 by the military for Fort Screven. The Tybee Island Historical Society purchased the building in 2001, saving it from destruction. That same year the Friends of the Tybee Theater (FOTT) was formed by a group of concerned Tybee citizens as a non-profit organization dedicated to the restoration of the theater. FOTT purchased the building in 2006 and launched an extensive cultural assessment and planning process. Theater restoration was completed in 2015.
