Dido Reflects on Music and Motherhood 20 Years After Her Rise to Fame

Dido kicks off her first world tour in 15 years in May and says she has a mix of emotions about hitting the road again.

“I am a mixture of excitement and apprehension because I haven’t done it in so long,” the British singer-songwriter, 47, tells PEOPLE of touring. “But the excitement is winning at the moment.”

Dido (née Florian Cloud de Bounevialle Armstrong) came to the U.S. in 1999 for her debut album, No Angel, and saw her popularity skyrocket when rapper Eminem sampled her ballad “Thank You” for his hit song “Stan” and has since sold more than 40 million albums worldwide. She is now releasing her fifth studio album Still on My Mind.

Personally, she’s also seen a lot of changes in her life. The singer is now a proud mom to 7-year-old son, Stanley, with writer Rohan Gavin, 47, whom she married in 2010.

Dido says being a mother has definitely had a positive impact on her career. “I feel way more confident about my instincts and about everything,” she says. “Musically it just made me more confident.”

Dido is also very excited be able to go on tour with her family, who plan to join her on different stops.

“There were definitely times back in the day where I would be doing these extraordinary shows in old Roman amphitheaters on a beautiful summer’s evening in the South of France, but there was no one there to see it with me,” she says. “Doing it this time around and sharing that with them makes it a really emotional thing.”
