Diddy Says His 'Life Got Better' During the Pandemic Since He Was Able to 'Get Closer' to His Kids

The pandemic has brought Diddy closer to his family.

Chatting with iconic producer Clive Davis during the virtual Pre-Grammy Gala benefitting MusiCares on Saturday night, the rapper, born Sean Combs, opened up about how being "sequestered" with his kids helped him make up for lost time.

"For me, my life got better because I was running myself into the ground and I wasn't taking enough time for my family and for myself. It's really been a blessing," he told Davis. "I lost the mother of my children and the time that [my kids and I] were sequestered together, it helped me to make up for all those years I was on tour and to get closer to my family."

"For me, it's been a blessing but really using the time to become a better father and a better person," he added. (Combs is dad to twin daughters Jessie and D'Lila, 14, and son Christian, 22 whom he shared with late partner Kim Porter as well as son Justin, 27, and daughter Chance, 14, from other relationships.)

The singer — who stepped away from the industry for a bit — said that he had been missing music-making as well.

"When I turned 50 … I knew something was missing and what was missing was music," he said. "I don't have a big splashy announcement. I can just say I'm back orchestrating and I'm excited to see what the future holds."

Approximately 2,000 people attended the gala featuring Clive Davis, which featured interviews with Bruce Springsteen, Alicia Keys and Rod Stewart. In attendance were the likes of U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Dan + Shay, Don Lemon, Charlie Puth, among others.

Along with spending more time with their dad, the musician's daughters have also been giving back during the pandemic. Last month, they donated special packages of beauty and skincare products to Alexandria House, which provides housing for women and children in the process of moving from emergency shelter to permanent housing.

"Last year and going into this year has been difficult for so many. We know how truly blessed we are, and our parents have taught us the importance of helping others," Chance, D'Lila and Jessie told PEOPLE in a statement then. "It's something that we've made a goal for ourselves as we start to make our own decisions and find our paths as young women."

"We have made long-lasting memories from our visit to Alexandria House," they add.
