A joke phone call to 10 Downing Street from "Harry" got people talking on Christmas Day

U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's Christmas video may have been misinterpreted.

On Monday, Sunak shared a joke video on social media showing him in the rare situation of being alone at 10 Downing Street, the official residence and office of the U.K.'s prime minister. Taking advantage of the situation, he cuddles Larry the cat, plays a game knocking over soda cans in a hallway, watches Elf and toasts marshmallows. But then the phone rings.

"Uh, No. 10 press office," Sunak said hesitantly as he answered the call. He then raised his eyebrows and said, "Harry, you've got the wrong number," before hanging up.

Some social media users believed he was referring to Prince Harry, who stepped back from his role as a working member of the royal family and moved to California with his wife, Meghan Markle, in 2020.

However, it's unlikely that Sunak was trying to troll the Duke of Sussex. Instead, most believe Sunak was referencing Harry Cole, a British journalist who wrote about the prime minister's personal phone number being leaked. (Given that Sunak has a weekly meeting with King Charles, it's doubtful that he would want to make such a joke.)

Keeping with tradition, the royal family stepped out on Christmas Day to attend church. King Charles and Queen Camilla led the way, followed closely behind by Kate Middleton and Prince William with their three children, Prince GeorgePrincess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Meghan, 42, and Prince Harry, 39, spent Christmas privately, having marked the holiday with the royal family in 2017 and 2018.

The 2017 holiday outing was a surprise as it took place just a month after the couple announced their engagement, but in years past, significant others didn't join the royal celebrations until after their weddings.

In the Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, released last year, the Duchess of Sussex recounted her first Christmas with the royal family.

"I remember so vividly the first Christmas at Sandringham," Meghan said. "Calling my mom, and she's like, 'How's it going?' And I said, 'Oh my gosh, it's amazing.' "

"It's just like a big family like I always wanted," she added. "And there was just this constant movement and energy and fun."

At dinner, Meghan sat next to "H's grandfather," Prince Philip.

"And I just thought it was so wonderful. And I was like, 'Oh, we chatted, and it was so great. And I talked about this and talked about this,' " she recalled, although she said that Prince Harry later informed her that she "had his bad ear," meaning Prince Philip likely couldn't hear parts of their conversation.

Meghan said, "I was like, 'Oh, well, I thought it went really well.' "

Following their May 2018 wedding, Prince Harry and Meghan headed to Sandringham for a traditional royal Christmas again that December. At the time, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were expecting their first child, and their son, Prince Archie, was born in May 2019.

In 2019, the couple decided to spend their first holiday season as a family of three privately in Canada.

Since relocating to Meghan's home state of California, the family has spent Christmas privately with their two children: Prince Archie, 4, and Princess Lilibet, 2.

Last month when Meghan hit the red carpet at Variety's Power of Women event in Los Angeles, she was asked about her favorite holiday traditions. "That’s a great question," she replied. "Our little ones are little, and we're enjoying every moment of it."
