On a recent sunny afternoon in SoHo, actor Jude Law did what many of us do when we find ourselves wandering around Lower Manhattan’s premiere shopping district: he went to Muji.

The downtown outpost of the hallowed Japanese consumer-goods retailer is an unlikely oasis in a chaotic corridor of commerce. When you walk in, you are immediately greeted by a cadre of electronic aroma diffusers, quietly dispersing their scented mists into the air. There are shelves full of simple homewares and racks full of inoffensive clothes to browse. I like to imagine that Jude Law finds this as peaceful as I do.

Borne back into the bustle of the city, Law left the store with a crisp Muji shopping bag in hand. He looked, I dare say, quite serene in his taut white T-shirt, canvas Saint Laurent Court sneakers, and hippyish striped lounge pants from the hippyish cashmere brand The Elder Statesman.

Which consumer goods did the actor take home that day? Well, here are some guesses.

A pack of white T-shirts

Based on Law’s shopping-day ensemble, this feels like the likeliest answer. According to the great minds at GQ Recommends, Muji makes the most versatile white T-shirt in the game. If true, a solid purchase.

A portable paper shredder

An unlikely choice, sure—but according to GQ wisdom, a satisfying one. There really is no feeling quite like the feeling of shredding paper.

A diffuser and a set of essential oils

Here’s a scenario: Jude walked into the Muji SoHo store, felt welcomed by those whirring aromatherapy diffusers, and carried one of those bad boys right up to the register. As one of my colleagues surmised, he looks like a man who likes a nicely scented room. Is he a cedarwood guy? Bergamot?

Blank ruled notebooks

The likeliest answer, because the notebooks really are one of Muji’s best products. Nothing like a blank sheet of paper to get the creative juices flowing.

A 10-pack of 0.38 ballpoint gel pens
