Did Brooke Shields Actually Originate Cher’s Iconic ‘Clueless’ Outfit? These Photos Suggest Yes

Shields first wore a yellow plaid suit in the 1993 film ‘Freaked,’ two years before ‘Clueless’ premiered in 1995

Brooke Shields is yet again proving her status as a fashion trailblazer.

The actress and fellow ‘90s icon Elizabeth Hurley, both 58, appeared on the Wednesday, April 3 episode of Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live to take a look back at some of their past style moments during the show’s segment “Versace or Hibachi.”

When host Andy Cohen presented Shields with a photo of the star wearing a yellow plaid suit in 1992, he commented that the actress was “channeling her inner Cher from ‘Clueless,’” referencing the iconic outfit worn by Alicia Silverstone in the cult-classic film.

Shields was quick to point out that she wore the ensemble in the 1993 film Freaked — which, notably, was two years before Clueless was released in 1995.

“That was a character!” Shields replied. “I’m gonna ‘hibachi’ it but it was a really good character in a movie that I did called ‘Freaked.’”

Clueless costume designer Mona May has previously shared that the iconic yellow plaid outfit Silverstone wore as Cher Horowitz was Dolce & Gabbana.

“I spent the money,” May told Elle in July 2020. “We tried so many different things for the yellow suit. We tried red, we tried blue, and then she put the yellow suit on and she became like a ray of sunshine. The energy of the yellow is so, I'm the queen.”

It’s not known what brand Shields is wearing in Freaked, but the stark similarity between the two ensembles is undeniable, despite some small differences. Silverstone’s look, for example, features a pleated skirt and shorter jacket, whereas Shields wears a straight skirt silhouette and longer jacket.

Silverstone revived her famous Clueless outfit in a Super Bowl ad for shopping platform Rakuten that aired in 2023, nearly 30 years after the film’s release. Christian Siriano was tapped to design the recreation, which was a modern-day spin on the memorable look. Siriano’s Fall/Winter 2023 collection served as another nod to the film with three plaid, Clueless-inspired ensembles.

Silverstone also paid homage to Cher in 2021 when she announced she was joining TikTok.

"Ugh! As if… I wouldn't join TikTok," she captioned her first video on the platform, adding the hashtags, "#Clueless" and "#AsIf."

In the clip, Silverstone wears a yellow plaid blazer as she reenacts the Clueless scene where Cher shakes off an obnoxious male who tries to hit on her and utters her signature phrase, "As if!”
