When Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt in 2016, it forced Pitt to take a serious look at his relationships with his family — and, it turns out, to reflect on some past relationships too. Ever since photos of Pitt and ex Jennifer Aniston hugging at the SAG Awards took the internet by storm, there’s been speculation that these two could be rekindling an old flame in the post-Jolie era. New sources neither confirm nor deny: But they do have some insight on why Pitt and Aniston are closer than ever these days.

On Wednesday, a source told Entertainment Tonight that Pitt’s self-reflection during his separation from Jolie has allowed him new clarity on his relationships, including his marriage with Aniston. “Brad is truly an introspective guy who has worked hard on himself. He has apologized to [Jennifer Aniston] for many things he felt were his issues in their relationship,” the source reported. “He truly takes ownership for his mistakes and that has changed their relationship with each other today.”

Over a decade after this couple split (and after Pitt’s less-than-discreet dalliance with Jolie), we’re sure Aniston appreciates him taking the time to admit where he went wrong. But the source said it’s more than the apology that makes a difference to Aniston: “Brad is completely sober now and is in such a different place than he was when they were together,” the source claimed. And it could be that this new side of Pitt is a much better fit for Aniston’s life — whether as a friend, confidant, or whatever else.

A second source confirmed that Pitt has “grown so much” since his split from Aniston, and suggested that their newfound closeness is a result of having had similar experiences in recent years. While Pitt was separating from Jolie, Aniston was going through a separation of her own. She and Justin Theroux married in 2015 and went separate ways three years later — and she and Pitt have apparently bonded over this shared hurdle.

“They have a very mature relationship that has evolved over time because they both have experienced marriages that didn’t work out,” the source explained. So, where exactly are they now? “Right now they just love and adore each other and have been much closer friends since their divorces.”

Look, we’re never going to cheer for couples getting divorced — but if these two have been able to heal old wounds, we’ll certainly take it as a silver lining.
