DeWanda Wise must confront her past in the upcoming thriller Imaginary.

Starring as Jessica, Wise is a 39-year-old woman who moves back into her childhood home with her family. The trailer, which features The Temptations’ classic “Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)”, depicts her youngest stepdaughter Alice (Pyper Braun) developing an eerie attachment to a stuffed bear named Chauncey she finds in the basement, a small toy that remained from Jessica’s own childhood.

Alice and Chancy start playing games that begin playful and become increasingly sinister. As Alice’s behavior becomes more and more concerning, Jessica intervenes only to realize Chauncey is much more than the stuffed toy bear she believed him to be.

The original film plays on the innocence of imaginary friends and asks the question: are they figments of childhood imagination, or is something more terrifying lying just beneath? Alongside Wise and Braun, Imaginary stars Tom Payne, Taegen Burns, Veronica Falcon, and Betty Buckley.

Co-written and directed by Jeff Wadlow, the horror film is due in theaters on March 8, 2023. Imaginary is not yet rated.

Wadlow detailed Wise’s role in the film’s creation, sharing with Deadline that the actress “has been more than a star on this movie – she has been a full creative partner. So much of horror grows out of our most basic fears from childhood, and DeWanda taps into all of that. You know that old saying that the audience’s imagination is scarier than any movie? We’re going to put that to the test.”

The Lionsgate film is produced by Blumhouse, the same team behind the chilling tales portrayed in M3GAN and Five Nights At Freddy’s.
