Devin on the spot: Patriots' McCourty now has four interceptions in the season's four games
New England Patriots veteran safety Devin McCourty has been a steadying presence in the defensive backfield for going on 10 seasons, but he’s taking things to a new level so far this year.
In the first quarter of the Patriots’ AFC East matchup against the Buffalo Bills, McCourty out-jumped the Bills’ John Brown to pull in a deep ball from Josh Allen. His 19-yard return gave Tom Brady and the Patriots offense first down at midfield, which became the team’s first touchdown of the day.
It was the fourth pick of the young season for the 32-year-old, a two-time All-Pro and two-time Pro Bowler.
Uniquely, he’s pulled in one interception in each game thus far: one in the end zone against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1; a tip-drill interception against the Miami Dolphins in Week 2; an open-field pick last week against the New York Jets; and this week’s against the Bills.
McCourty is the first player in 16 years to record an interception in each of the season’s first four games; Minnesota Vikings’ defensive back Brian Russell was last to do it, in 2003.
The 2010 first-round pick had one interception in each of the past four seasons.
