Devin Dawson Dishes on His Emotional Proposal to Leah Sykes and How He's 'Grown a Lot'

Devin Dawson is raving about his new fiancée — and the swoon-worthy way he asked her to marry him.

On the red carpet at the 2019 ACM Awards in Las Vegas on Sunday night, the “All on Me” singer opened up about his proposal to Leah Sykes, telling PEOPLE that he “could go on forever” when it comes to how he popped the question.

“I grew up in Northern California. She’d never been to San Francisco so we went to San Francisco for the weekend,” Dawson says. “The long story short is, I took her around the whole city. I think she expected me to propose at this place, at Twin Peaks, at Ocean Beach and I didn’t do it until the very end.”

“We went up to a rooftop at Virgin Hotels,” he continues. “They let us have the whole rooftop to ourselves, and I got down on one knee and she just started bawling.”

Dawson previously told PEOPLE that his proposal came on the day of the couple’s two-year anniversary.

“I’ve known for a while now that I wanted that to be the day I propose to her,” the Dark Horse singer said last month. “I wanted to set that day in stone so we could always remember how important March 10th is to us.”

While on the red carpet at the 2019 ACMs, Dawson and Sykes ran into Michael Ray and Carly Pearce, who also recently got engaged, and the four all posed for photos together.

Dawson, who opted for a black suit and a red tie for the night, tells PEOPLE that he chose his outfit to coordinate with his fiancée, who stunned in a red dress.

“We don’t want to match, but we want to go together,” he says of Sykes. “I usually wear all black but she had a red dress this year so I was like, ‘Baby I’ll wear a little bit of red for you,’ which is honestly a little out of character for me. But I’ve grown a lot since I’ve met her, so it’s a good example of that.”

As for how he’s most grown, Dawson says that he’s become more religious since meeting Sykes.

“I never went to church growing up,” he says. “I’ve always been spiritual but not religious, and since I’ve met her I’ve been really enjoying going to church when I’m in town for it.”
