After years of speculation, Netflix confirmed on Wednesday that it has ordered a Devil May Cry anime series based on the popular video game franchise.

Adi Shankar, who previously served as an executive producer on Netflix’s anime series Castlevania, will shepherd the eight-episode project as series creator, showrunner and exec producer. Alex Larsen (Netflix’s Yasuke) is on board to write.

“I’m honored that Netflix and Capcom have entrusted me to shepherd the Devil May Cry franchise,” Shankar said in a statement. “Alex Larsen and I love these characters, we are part of the fandom, and vow to surpass the exceptionally high bar we set for ourselves.”

Here’s Netflix’s official logline for the adaptation: “Sinister forces are at play to open the portal between the human and demon realms. In the middle of it all is Dante, an orphaned demon-hunter-for-hire, unaware that the fate of both worlds hangs around his neck.”

And though this is the first confirmation from Netflix that a Devil May Cry anime is happening, the possibility of an adaptation was first floated in 2018, when Shankar told IGN he’d acquired the rights to Devil May Cry “so the jabronis in Hollywood don’t f—k this one up, too.”

Capcom’s Devil May Cry game franchise kicked off in 2001, centering on Dante as he sought to defeat the demon lord Mundus. Subsequent installments were released in 2003 (Devil May Cry 2), 2005 (Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening), 2008 (Devil May Cry 4) and 2019 (Devil May Cry 5), along with the reboot DmC: Devil May Cry in 2013.
