Detroit Fox Affiliate Airs Video Tribute To Jessica Starr; Meteorologist Died By Suicide After Eye Surgery

Jessica Starr, the popular Fox 2 Detroit meteorologist whose death this week had colleagues and viewers in shock and grief, was given an on-air tribute last night, with station mates sharing memories and her high school basketball coach saying, “She’s still a success story from Walled Lake Central and I’m not going to stop telling that story.”

Watch the video tribute below.

Starr died by suicide Wednesday two months after opting to undergo LASIK vision correction surgery and a month after sharing the story of her difficult, ongoing recovery with fans on Facebook. In a November video post, Starr spoke of dimming vision and sought advice and prayers from viewers.

In a statement credited to the Fox 2 staff that accompanies the video tribute, , colleagues note, “The 35-year-old’s story was too short and begs for a different ending.” Starr is survived by a husband and two children.

Starr had worked at WJBK Fox 2 since 2010. The video tribute offers no clues or answers to the choice Starr made this week, but reminds Detroit viewers of a local favorite and suggests to the rest of us the on-screen appeal that so captured the city.
