More than two decades since Joaquin Phoenix landed his first Oscar nomination, for playing an unhinged Roman emperor, the Academy Award winner is reuniting with his “Gladiator” director Ridley Scott for another epic period piece.

Originally titled “Kitbag,” upcoming historical drama “Napoleon” centers on the infamous ruler’s life and love with his wife Josephine, played by Vanessa Kirby.

Per the official synopsis, “Kitbag” is an original and personal look at Napoleon’s origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine. The intention of the film is to capture Napoleon’s famous battles, relentless ambition, and astounding strategic mind as an extraordinary military leader and war visionary.

Director Scott collaborated again with “All the Money in the World” scribe David Scarpa on the script, with Scott and Kevin Walsh producing “Napoleon” for Scott Free Productions. Apple Studios is behind the project after first being announced in 2020 with 20th Century.

“Napoleon” began production in February 2022 and wrapped in May of the same year. It’s set for a theatrical release from Apple this November ahead of streaming on Apple TV+ at a yet-to-be-announced date.
