Designer Liz Caan and her family have lived in a historic home in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts for nearly two decades. But it wasn’t until last year—a year in which many of us spent an unprecedented amount of time at home—that she sought to lend her design expertise to her own dwelling for the first time. The end result includes a completely revamped kitchen that is now a go-to spot for her entire family.

“I think the beauty of this home is that it's constantly evolving," Caan tells House Beautiful. "Pieces have moved and been re-purposed. I didn’t throw things away. I recovered. I moved art. I sold past furniture and replaced it with antiques mainly because I was tired of looking at cheap, poorly-made furniture that I am certain was being made in a factory overseas.” The designer adds that she was really focused on what was important to her and what wasn’t—that's what shaped her design decisions.

The renovation of the home’s kitchen was especially important, as Caan’s family of five frequents this space the most. Here, she turned an outdated space into a modern oasis, with the help of radiant heat floors made of Belgian bluestone, sourced from Marmi Natural Stone, as well as cabinets and a sink from deVOL Kitchens. The latter elements were all made in the UK, which reminded Caan of her family heritage. “My grandfather was from England and my father used to fly out air balloons with the Unit Jack flag on it,” she tells us.

The room's furniture and decor is equally personal, with nearly every item from vendors and craftspeople who Caan knows and admires, and has been working with for years. “I wanted this kitchen to have some soul and wanted to be surrounded by things I love made by people I love,” she adds. That warmth is underscored with a variety of light fixtures that lend an inviting glow.

Ultimately, Caan sought to create a stronger connection between the indoors and outdoors in the home’s kitchen, while also improving upon functionality and efficiency—and she certainly accomplished just that.
