From Kate Spade to Coach and Mulberry, here are the best designer bags on sale right now. (Kate Spade)

As someone who has always opted for cheap, on-trend bags her entire life, I've now discovered the benefits of saving up to purchase one or two quality 'forever' handbags that go with everything in my wardrobe.

The main benefits? A luxe bag from a quality brand will last a lifetime if you look after it, meaning less expense in the long run. And, as my pleather bags always fell apart after a few years of regular use, buying a high-quality piece means way less waste or environmental impact. Because the average faux leather handbag will take 500 years to decompose in landfill.

That has probably given you pause for thought, no?

Top tips: scour the Boxing Day sales to bag yourself a bargain on a design you may have had your eye on for a while. We all love a discount, and this year the savings are better than ever, with prices slashed at Selfridges, John Lewis, Coggles and more - we've even spotted styles with over £500 off.

It's also crucial to remember that if you do want to get rid of any of your designer handbags in the future, you're way more likely to be able to sell them – meaning that it's less impactful on the planet. Or they'll be snapped up in your local charity shop, and raise loads of money for a great cause.

(Whereas my sad, old, cheap pleather bags always looked so worse for wear I'd have been embarrassed to donate them). Of course, quality handbags come with a steeper price point due to the craftmanship involved and the materials used.

However, we've scoured the sales and found some of the most covetable luxury handbags with hundreds of pounds to save.

Check out our edit of our favourite beautiful, classic and colourful pieces from big-name designer brands (think Mulberry, Aspinal of London and Radley). Buy now, keep forever, and make a saving while you're at it. That's a motto we're standing by.
