‘Designated Survivor,’ ‘Tuca and Bertie’ Canceled at Netflix

“Designated Survivor” and “Tuca & Bertie” have both been canceled by Netflix after one season each at the streamer.

For the Kiefer Sutherland-led political thriller, this marks the second time it’s gotten the chop. The first two seasons ran on its original network home, ABC, with Netflix announcing plans to revive the show last fall. The show’s third season debuted on the streamer last month.

“We are proud to have offered fans a third season of ‘Designated Survivor,’ and will continue to carry all three seasons for years to come,” Netflix said in a statement. “We’re especially thankful to star and executive producer Kiefer Sutherland, who brought passion, dedication and an unforgettable performance as President Kirkman. We’re also grateful to showrunner/executive producer Neal Bear for his guiding vision and steady hand, creator/executive producer David Guggenheim and EPs Mark Gordon, Suzan Bymel, Simon Kinberg, Aditya Sood and Peter Noah along with the cast and crew who crafted a compelling and satisfying final season.”

The drama starred Sutherland as Tom Kirkman, a lower-level cabinet member who is suddenly appointed President of the United States after a catastrophic attack on the U.S. Capitol during the State of the Union. Kal Penn, Adan Canto, Italia Ricci and Maggie Q also starred.

“Tuca & Bertie,” an animated series from “Bojack Horseman” alum Lisa Hanawalt, debuted back in May to largely positive reviews. The series starred Tiffany Haddish as Tuca, a cocky, care-free toucan and Ali Wong as her best friend Bertie, an anxious, daydreaming songbird.

“Lisa Hanawalt created a relatable yet whimsical world in ‘Tuca & Bertie,'” the streamer said. “We’re grateful to Lisa, and her fellow executive producers Raphael Bob-Waksberg, Noel Bright, Steven A. Cohen, and EPs/stars Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong, along with all of the writers and animators for sharing the funny and dynamic female bird duo of Tuca and Bertie with the world. While Tuca & Bertie won’t have a second season, we’re proud to feature this story on Netflix for years to come.”

After news of the cancelation, Hanawalt tweeted she was proud of her team’s work.

Tuca & Bertie is everything I wanted it to be: beautiful, funny, fresh, loving, horny, weird, experimental, comforting, and deep. The whole team put our hearts and asses into this show, and I’m so proud of it.

“Tuca & Bertie is everything I wanted it to be: beautiful, funny, fresh, loving, horny, weird, experimental, comforting, and deep,” Hanawalt posted. She added that she hopes the show will be picked up elsewhere, writing, “Thank you to everyone who loves and supports T&B, and to everyone who was comforted and felt like this show gave you a voice. I’m hopeful we can find a home for Tuca & Bertie to continue their adventures.”
