Derek Mason says Kirby Smart isn't fooling him by not naming a starting QB
Vanderbilt’s Derek Mason isn’t having Georgia coach Kirby Smart’s quarterback secrecy.
As Week 1 starter Jacob Eason’s comeback from the knee injury he suffered against Appalachian State nears, Smart has been coy about if and when Eason would regain his job. Freshman Jake Fromm has played extremely well in Eason’s absence. And Mason thinks Fromm will be the starter on Saturday when Vanderbilt plays Georgia even if Smart hasn’t yet named a starter for the game.
“Right now I believe Fromm is the guy,” Mason said Tuesday. “I believe Eason’s a very talented quarterback but that’s up to Kirby who he decides to go with. He’s not fooling me if that’s what we think we’re doing here. That young man — Fromm’s won ballgames. He just came off a [41-0] win. Listen, we can quit with the coaching dramatics. When it’s all is said and done they’re 5-0, they’re a good football team with lots of talent and playing extremely well.”
Georgia has moved up to No. 5 in the country through the first five weeks of the season as Fromm has completed nearly 60 percent of his passes and thrown eight touchdowns to just two interceptions. While Eason, a sophomore, was the team’s starter at the beginning of the season, Fromm’s performance has made it a legitimate dilemma if Eason should get his job back.
That’s probably why Smart is content keeping it so close to the vest. Though given his disdain for information being public, Smart would probably be keeping his QB situation undefined if Fromm had thrown eight interceptions and two touchdowns.
Smart was asked about Mason’s comments after Georgia’s practice Tuesday. His response was unsurprising. Via Online Athens:
“Derek Mason is entitled to his opinion,” Smart said after practice Tuesday. “Derek Mason is not, he’s not at our practices, he doesn’t watch our practice tape that I know of, so I’m not really concerned with those comments.”
