Derek Jeter rookie memorabilia up for auction as Hall of Fame election looms

As Derek Jeter awaits possibly unanimous election to the Baseball Hall of Fame, multiple pieces of key memorabilia from his days as a prospect and rookie for the New York Yankees are going up for auction.

The jersey worn by Jeter during his 15-game call-up to the majors in 1995 and the Yankees’ final scouting report on the young shortstop out of Michigan, as well as rare Jeter rookie card, will be available for bidding at Goldin Auctions from Jan. 20 to Feb. 22.

Jeter first donned the jersey in his MLB debut on May 29, 1995, in a road game against the Seattle Mariners, in his first major league action. He went on to hit 250/.294/.375 in 51 plate appearances, a warm-up for his Rookie of the Year campaign in 1996.

Bidding for the jersey, which is signed by Jeter, will start at $50,000, per Goldin.

While the results of Jeter’s debut weren’t indicative of what kind of talent the Yankees were getting, his pre-draft scouting report was prophetic. Filed on April 8, 1992, Yankees scout Dick Groch gushed over the Kalamazoo Central High School star, calling him a “blue chip” and “A five tool player [that] will be a ML Star!”

The Yankees would eventually take Jeter sixth overall in the 1992 draft, and the rest is history.

“Derek’s upcoming Hall of Fame induction is undoubtedly well deserved.” said Goldin Auctions founder Ken Goldin in a statement. “Being able to bring what are two of the most unique and valuable Derek Jeter pieces to the public just prior to the induction is truly an honor for us at Goldin Auctions.”

Rounding out the collection is a Select Certified Mirror Blue Jeter rookie card from 1996. Goldin says the card is a limited edition of which there are only 44 copies on record, and only eight in such a condition.

Jeter is expected to be elected to the Hall of Fame on Jan. 21 in a landslide. According to Hall of Fame voting compiler Ryan Thibodeaux’s database, every public vote from the BBWAA has included Jeter, which means we could be facing a second straight Yankee elected unanimously to the Hall.

Given Jeter’s credentials — 14-time All-Star, five-time World Series champion, face of the baseball’s biggest team — that’s not a huge surprise. The city of New York is already preparing for the election with reported plans to dedicate a street adjacent to Yankee Stadium as “Jeter Street.”
