The "Dancing With the Stars" judge shared that Hayley Erbert is "doing amazing."

As Derek Hough's wife Hayley Erbert continues her recovery from emergency brain surgery last year, the Dancing With the Stars judge is reflecting on their experience. Appearing on The Jennifer Hudson Show on Monday morning, Hough talked about how weird it felt to win a Creative Arts Emmy in January (for his work on DWTS) while Erbert was still recovering.

"It was kind of crazy too because it was such a difficult time in December," Hough told Hudson. "To then, exactly a month later, be on stage accepting such a prestigious award in choreography, it was crazy."

Hough continued, “it was a really wild, kind of surreal experience being in a hospital room for a month and then in front of thousands of people accepting something like that. It was a lot of ups and downs, like I said before. It's been wild.”

Erbert was rushed to the hospital on Dec. 6 in Washington, D.C., just after she and Hough finished a stop on their Symphony of Dance concert tour. She was subsequently diagnosed with an intracranial hematoma (a collection of blood in the skull), and treated with an emergency craniectomy. That procedure removes a portion of the skull in order to relieve pressure on the brain.

A few weeks later, on Dec. 20, Erbert underwent more surgery in order to restore the part of her skull that had been removed. That all sounds intense, but by Christmas she had recovered enough to do a dual post with Hough on Instagram sharing holiday wishes.

During his talk with Hudson, Hough shared that Erbert's recovery continues to go well. He also thanked fans for their support during this challenging time.

“She is doing amazing. She is an absolute miracle," Hough said. “It’s been a rollercoaster, it's been wild, but I just have to say again thank you for everyone who has been so supportive and so loving. It really truly means the world to us all, it really does, my wife and I, so thank you guys.”
