Depeche Mode’s Martin Gore has announced a new five-track EP called The Third Chimpanzee. It’s led by a new song titled “Mandrill.” The EP is due out January 29 via Mute. Check out the “Mandrill” visual below.

“The first track I recorded had a sound that wasn’t human,” Martin Gore said in a statement. “It sounded primate-like. I decided to name it ‘Howler,’ after a monkey. Then, when it came time to name the EP, I remembered reading the book The Rise and Fall of the Third Chimpanzee. It all made sense to call it that, as the EP was made by one of the third chimpanzees.”

Martin Gore and the rest of Depeche Mode were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame earlier this month. They were also honored by several musicians—including Arcade Fire, Chvrches, and Coldplay—with tributes during the ceremony. The band released its concert documentary Spirits in the Forest in 2019.
