Denver metro’s only drive-in theater to open Friday

DENVER (KDVR) — Grab those blankets and tune your speakers, the 88 Drive-In Theatre‘s 48th season officially kicks off on Friday.

The Denver metro’s last remaining drive-in theater will open with a double feature of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” and “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.” Both movies are rated PG-13, and the first feature will begin once it’s dark out.

Tickets for the first drive-in showing of the season will only be sold at the theatre’s box office, which will open at 7:30 p.m. Admission includes access to all films, so moviegoers can stay for one or all films.

Tickets will cost $10 per person and children under the age of 12 get in free.

If you can’t attend the first drive-in night of the summer season, 88 Drive-In Theatre will be offering the double feature under the stars until Sunday, May 12.

Fans of the open-air theater, located in Commerce City, were happy to hear the drive-in was reopening in 2024.

In 2023, the owners of the 88 Drive-In Theatre decided they wanted to step away from the business and “go in a different direction.” The owners requested to rezone the lot to allow a multi-tenant warehouse to replace the theater, according to Commerce City.

FOX31 reached out to the drive-in to confirm if the plans to replace the theater with the warehouse will move forward, but the theater has not yet responded.

Regardless of future plans, the drive-in will be open for at least one more season. Movies will be shown Thursday through Sunday.

The beloved 88 Drive-In opened in 1972 and has been family-owned since 1976.
