Demi Moore’s big break in Hollywood came from her role as Jackie Templeton on General Hospital in 1982, but it was landing the role of Jules in St. Elmo’s Fire three years later that cemented her celebrity status. She was a part of the Brat Pack, a group of up-and-coming actors who often appeared onscreen together and included famous names like Robert Downey Jr., Rob Lowe, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy.

The group grabbed headlines wherever they went, and they partied quite a bit, but their work was always good when they were on set. The division between those two worlds — work and play — sometimes got lost in the press, who only viewed them as hard-partying Hollywood, and it’s the reason why Moore doesn’t exactly love the nickname.

“It’s really interesting cause you know, the Brat Pack moniker that came about really didn’t have anything to do with us as people, as professionals,” Moore explained to Good Morning America. “It was just a clever headline.” She believes that it down-played the group’s work as a whole, adding, “For me, I didn’t love it, being thought of as a brat because I thought it kind of diminished us as professionals, but I didn’t carry it.”

It “impacted” each member of the Brat Pack in different ways and it’s why Andrew McCarthy is doing an upcoming documentary for Hulu called Brats. The nickname affected McCarthy quite a bit while for Lowe, “it just slid off his back.” Moore is excited to see the documentary because she really “enjoyed” her time looking back with McCarthy. Moore also gave a bit of a spoiler about Brats, though. She added, “I was only sorry that we didn’t get a chance to be together at one time, that would be really a treat.” It would have been epic to see the entire group of friends back together almost 40 years later

The Brat Pack moniker was coined by writer David Blum for a 1985 feature in New York Magazine, titled “Hollywood’s Brat Pack.” The interview was only supposed to feature Emilio Estevez, but when he invited Blum to join him on a night out with Lowe and Judd Nelson at the Hard Rock Cafe, the story went in a completely different direction. The actors weren’t thrilled with their unflattering portrayal, but the nickname stuck around forever. Let’s hope McCarthy’s revisit of the Brat Pack’s origins offers a fresh opportunity to reframe the negative narrative.
